I'm conducting a survey for a school assignment and I wanted to invite everyone to participate in it! It would be extremely helpful if everyone took the time to fill it out. My goal is to get at least 30 responses. The less friendly and more academic tone begins after the line break. I wanted to include this because just posting the survey on it's own would make me appear too much like a robot.

I am conducting an independent survey of individuals on Bay12 Forums. The goal of the survey is to obtain data regarding popular opinion on global warming. Some of these individuals are more anonymous than others, therefore demographic will not be recorded, and all results will be considered to have been given by completely anonymous individuals.

Bay12 Forums is a message board created by the developers of the video game Dwarf Fortress that hosts discussions about the game and other topics. The majority, but not all, of the individuals surveyed can therefore be assumed to be gamers. Gamers occupy a wide range of ages, from pre-teens to advanced middle age, and the demographic is divided roughly in half with regard to gender (http://essentialfacts.theesa.com/).

I recall that there was a B12 demographic survey and that it showed that the forums were predominantly male (like 70 or 80%?), but I was referring to the general gamer population according to the ESA. If I can find it and the data is still available, I would love to cite it for the survey.

And yeah, B12 does skew left (which should be completely unsurprising considering LCS's creator). Even beyond that, it seems to skew pretty heavily towards an enthusiasm for science and, well. Consensus is broad and very existent.

I'm a bit irked because opinions--popular or not--don't matter in science, but the bigger problem is that "average global temperature" is a rather absurd concept, hence my choice of C on the first one. A temperature is a local intensive property defined as the average kinetic energy of a given substance or parcel of atmosphere. Treating the average kinetic energy in a given parcel of atmosphere of two very different locations as components of a single system which can then be averaged and provide any useful information is downright silly.

Tracking changes of this average average kinetic energy and then acting as though they are the cause of various events rather than effects of those events is more silly, before you get around to treating the average energy input as the actual energy input, and start acting like it is surprising when this produces absurd results which need explanation.

Tying that entire average average kinetic energy system with average energy input to a single controlling factor which involves a high gain positive feedback effect and claiming it is plausible because you can tune a GCM to replicate past average average kinetic energy fluctuations decently with these assumptions (and various others) is a whole new level of silliness.

Trying to enact global sociopolitical and economic shifts on the basis of this silliness, well, you get the idea.

Right/Left political affiliations generally line up pretty well on this subject, but I'm pretty far over in anarchist/socialist land, my political positions don't matter scientifically, and my understanding of science is that it works best when politics is kept out entirely. Not a popular set of positions here though so I'll drop this in a spoiler to avoid the thread turning into a shitfest, as I've long since lost the energy to argue about this that I had years ago.

If anyone does wish to correct me or whatnot, for the sake of the thread purpose, please place it in a spoiler or a PM.
