Science INCOMPLETE. (pending)
« on: October 29, 2016, 06:12:03 pm »

So I tried a bunch of stuff to get gods to place curses onto captive goblins and trolls, but it doesn't work.

I tried getting trolls to topple statues, but that didn't do anything. One troll toppled 6 statues in a temple-designated area. No effect.

I also tried attaching a platform covered in statues to a pressure plate and making them collapse that (for goblins). No effect.

I have a fairly large facility dug out that can be repurposed to other methods. Does anyone else have any ideas?

We've seen human vampires, I'm assuming there has been Goblin and Elven vampires. It seems based on your experiments that only direct destruction of a statue will do anything. Do the statues have to be statues of the gods? I didn't think they did, but...
Maybe try recruiting goblins into your fort and having them tantrum and thus destroy temple statues that way? I'm thinking that only those with can-speak can get vampirism, but I don't know for sure.

did you try designating different areas to different gods? I mean, a place where workshippers pray to their different gods isn't the same as a temple built and dedicated to a single god. In the first the god could be "ah well, that wasn't mine", but on the second said deity would be "HEY! DON'T MESS WITH MY STUFF!"

Just saying, no idea if it really works that way. But something I noticed toppling statues in human temples is that the temple is dedicated to a single deity.

Yeah, I would try this, and specifically with statues of that particular god. If you didn't already know, you can select specific gods when making statues using "Related to historical figure" under image details.

I guess the pressure plate one wouldn't work because it's several steps removed, but I recall PatrickLundall mentioning having goblin tantrum on a chain to destroy it. Perhaps try that?

I've heard that the toppling units need to be named; i.e. historical units - so I did a test for that for me. (Convenient vampire or werebeast access would be nice to have, after all.)

Tested with a spare Troll from caverns (rather than siege) I had lying around in 42.06 - sacced a dwarf to name them, then they got to topple two random slate/andesite statues in an overlapping temples of every individual god and all of them. No cursing announcements or extreme musculature. (Wanted to see if a full title would work better, but my next picked flimsy very weak unarmed dwarf killed the troll.)

However, I then checked open-legends, and while this world indeed had werebeasts and vampires (26 types of each, medium world) none of the gods whose temples I designated had ever cursed anybody. An idle wild guess that the curses might be locked towards a particular god, but whether this is true or means anything I can't confirm (checked few VAMPIRE_NUMBER:1 worlds with legends browser, but they sometimes had vampires missing completely, making this pretty hard to prove.)

A creature/invader that kills a pet will instantly become a named historic figure.

Assign a pet to somebody, then drop it into the containment cell for "troll enrichment activity" purposes.

It will ding the happiness of the dwarf you assigned the pet (Hunting dogs are ideal, because the dwarf in question has no say about receiving pet owner status.) to, but it instantly promotes any old random invader to historic figure status.

Oh, I tried initially with named migrant pets - but the damn cavern troll never attacked any of them, even after killing the dwarf.

Good point. I guess I can not sacrifice dwarves, then.

Clay statues currently do not support the details menu; use stone, metal, or glass instead.

Without any direct knowledge myself, my impression from the forums is that you need to select the god whose statues you want to defile carefully to be one who actually bestow curses (and my impression is that most don't). Thus, I'd generate worlds and check them with Legends Mode to find gods who've bestowed curses of the desired kind (I don't know if it's random or if gods have particular cursing preferences). In addition to that, the collected pool of cursing gods has to include at least one available to a dwarven civ (which, if course, is the one you need to embark as). I'd expect many a world generation failure before hitting one that gives access to suitable cursers.

This right here. I have not tested this myself but from everything I have seen and read on the subject not all gods curse.

Thing is, I don't think the OP wants to give up his fort to gen another world just yet.

And, I doubt a statue in the likeness of the diety will work any better, human temples have statues of humans and such.

Try switching the facility to a dwarf enrichment one, just to try.

Just guessing but you might get better results by increasing "vampire curse types" and "were curse types" in the advanced world gen paramters. I'm thinking these cap the number of gods who are capable of cursing.
