Warthunder Tanks and Planes a good Free to Play game
« on: October 26, 2016, 06:07:27 am »

Hi guys, I have found a thread on this but the title was outdated and no one posted in it since January so I decided to create a new thread for it.

Warthunder is a great game featuring tanks, planes and anti-air vehicles of various types.
Basically it models crew and tank components inside the tank, there are no hit points. You die/kill an enemy by blowing up their ammo rack or killing all their crew.

I'm gonna describe it from the tanks perspective since I don't have much experience with planes.

It has a casual mode which gives you map markers of where the enemies are and an indicator of where your tanks shell is going to land, I also think you can see the enemies outline if you aim at them through foliage but can't remember since I don't play that mode.
A realistic and a simulator mode which are very similar, they remove the shell indicator so you have to aim and judge distance yourself and enemy tanks only show up on the map after they have been hit by you or a team mate, they also only stay lit up for a few seconds and then disappear again.
Simulator can only be played in special events and is not much different from realistic other than team mates names not showing up above them, I can't remember if they show up on the map or not, I will update this thread again at a later date.

Personally I would recommend realistic, having to judge distance and aim yourself might seem scary at first but it is not that difficult really.

I have played this game for a while now and they have vastly improved it since they first introduced tanks.
If you want to talk about this game or find people to play with from Bay12 feel free to post here and let us know your username so we can add each other.

Used to play (a lot), found that it was even more rage-inducing than League of Legends. Would periodically binge-play, then ragedelete, then reinstall a month or two later and repeat.

Finally decided WT was like an abusive relationship, and dumped it forever.

There's already a topic on this. It's always better to bring back an old topic than start a new one.

I think this game lost most of its following after the Battle Rating system was introduced and made the game nigh-unplayable. Vehicles that have no right fighting each other have been getting squeezed into the same match more and more often, and it's only been getting made worse by more and more additions to the tail end of the roster squeezing everything in tighter.

Like I said, I found that one already but the forum told me it would be better to start a new topic plus that one is dead and outdated.

It has a lot more players now than it did last year.
The battle rating system has been vastly improved and only occasionally puts your tank up against higher ranks on top of that it only happens in the high rank range so if you are happy playing in low to mid or even early late ranks it doesn't affect you. I'm sticking to tanks in battle rating 4.7 at the moment I have not once seen a tank that was higher than 5.0 or lower than 3.7 facing me or in my team and 3.7 tanks can easily deal with 5.0 tanks.
A lot of it's problems have been fixed and it is very fun to play now.

I loved War Thunder Tanks, especially after having come from World of Tanks. I much prefer the damage model in WTT(?) than WoT, since it reminded me of Red Orchestra, but better. I never did try out the realism mode though, cause I'm a pansy =p I really should give it a shot since it's right up my alley. Of course, there's also tons of other games on my to-play agenda...

Come back to it once in a while to find they've made it worse than the last time somehow. Used to love it but the grind killed it for me and to make it worse, every time I come back to it it seems like they've added yet another plane to research between me and those sweet sweet jets at the end. I shouldn't be cursing the addition of new planes, I should be celebrating, but the fact that each plane added to the tree increases the time it'll take me to reach the end just makes me hate them.

I do enjoy the occasional arcade battle, but it's almost not worth the ridiculous hard drive space it requires for the rare times I play it. I should just take RK's advice and delete it and never look back. Thankfully I never sunk any money into it like I was tempted to do so many times in those early days. Just far far too many hours.

Hitlerbolt is the best plane and everyone knows it.

Personally I quit when I realized the russian vehicles were ahistorically overpowered. That just ruined my fun. I mean, if I know shit about historical planes, etc*, I expect that knowledge to be helpful in a game with historical planes, etc*, in it.

* there was no tank mode last time I played War Thunder, but I assume it's the same for them

The last time I played anything in this genre (historical-ish multiplayer f2p vehicle battle game), it was World of Warships.

I didn't know this game is so hated here. I play with German tanks and play pretty often, the game seems pretty balanced to me and I don't see any issues with it.
It is a lot of fun especially with mates.

If there is someone here who wants to give it a try or is looking for someone to play with pm me your username or write it here in a post, I'm currently looking for people to play with however I'm in the Australian time zone so keep that in mind.

The Russian tanks aren't specifically overpowered, they just happen to fit perfectly into gameplay and there is greatest amount of good tanks in a rów - namely T-34s and KV/IS lines. Recently they changed how sloped armour works and because of that Soviet armour got nerfed, but so did other vehicles with sloped armour.

It's honestly not so much that the game is imbalanced between the factions. I was roughly equally successful with every faction's vehicles.

The game is imbalanced for everyone, because a low player count plus an extremely bad tiering system has made it so that vehicles end up fighting other vehicles that are way out of their league (in land, air, and probably sea once that gets fleshed out). Tanks go up against tanks that can penetrate them from two kilometers out while they themselves have to flank their enemy at 50 meters to even hurt them. Planes go up against planes that are a year more advanced and can outperform them in every way.

The developers are well aware that this is a problem, and they're well aware that they're making it worse with every new vehicle they add without adapting the system at all, and they're well aware that it's literally destroyed their player base. They've made it clear that they have no interest in fixing it, and it's not presumptuous to assume that they're just playing it out and milking the cash cow until it withers and dies.

I remember it was the battle rating system that pissed me off too. Have shit starter plane, go into match, get curb stomped by much better machines.

Honestly Warthunders greatest flaw is that it tried to divide the playerbase into the arcade, realistic and simulator groups.

This prevents them from developing 1 coherent game.

They have very good handling of the flying, but they fail to make a really engaging gamemode around this.

Same for tanks, good vehicles, inconsistent gameplay.

What is for example the use of the entire AA class of vehicles when in arcade they just kamikaze anyway and in realistic/simulator there are hardly any planes in the air?

Honestly, most of the AA guns are anti-tank capable at their tier in their own right. There are a handful that aren't, but even they can be used for scouting and harassing, and they still get artillery.

Besides, when planes do show up in realistic and simulator ground battles, they're usually serious business and AA can make a big contribution.

They're also really cheap to spawn in with which makes them good backups if you're having a bad time playing.

All that said, you're at least a little right about dividing the player base, but it was still working before they went and made the BR mistake. Yeah, load times were kinda long, but the gameplay was fun and unique, and it's not something anyone's going to replace any time soon.

Which is sad, because they ruined it.
