A NEW SOLUTION FOR STATE SECURITY

Thanks to the government’s Safety Bill, the Nation is experiencing the lowest levels of violent crime in years. But, our ambitious goals have not yet been reached; there still exists those who would pose a threat to our peaceful citizens. To all of us.

In order to ensure state security and protect personal freedoms, a new kind of technology is required…

INTRODUCING ORWELL…

A new security program that combines cutting edge information retrieval with human-directed suspect profiling.

For Orwell to be truly successful, however, we need you. Someone outside of the Nation, capable of discerning information posted by suspects online, obtained through communication devices, and personal files. You will have to carefully decide what information is crucial for our investigations. What we need to know.

Be aware. There is no overstating the importance of your role. Stakes are high and lives hang in the balance.

I was reminded about this game today when i got sent an email

"Hello Applicant,

I am pleased to confirm that you have been accepted from a pool of over 47,856 applicants to be part of the first Orwell trials to be held in The Nation."

I had forgotten i'd signed up for it! It looks pretty darn cool though so can't wait to try it out.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

This seems like the wrong forum...

Reminds me of this kickstarter, except modern and serious instead of AESTHETIC.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

It honestly feels like a lot of their problems came from the fact that their entire team was composed of cats, and the people who were supposed to be herding them were also cats.

..Episodes? When I read that I think limited content, cliffhangers, linear design. Maybe it's just the demo that's going to be in episodes. Or maybe I'm just wrong and it won't be like most episodic games. I was hoping they'd sort of keep it open like how Uplink was, if that'd even work for a game like this

Sort of with a Papers Please feel I guess?

I think the weekly episodes release is an interesting idea. More games could be released that do something similar, if you have a good solid engine. You'd want an amount of material similar to a 1 hour TV show or 2 hour movie, tops, per episode.

Current traditional games are basically plotted like a movie, except they go for ~40 hours. You buy one of these per franchise per year, that works out to ~1 hour a week of content anyway, but you binge it in 2 weeks and get sick of it. So spreading out content weekly (TV-length) or monthly (movie-length) has some promise.

Although if more games go this way, being more like serialized TV than movies, they're going to have issues that are more like TV shows as well: e.g. mid-season cancellations.

I think that's garbage though. One of the reasons I buy games instead of television is so that I don't have to space anything out. I'd rather wait for a season of a popular show to end and then watch every episode back-to-back than to have to wait x days in-between. If there's a 40 hour movie I want to have the option of watching half of it or all of it at once. Games spaced out into episodes just disappoint me and make me lose interest. When I see episode 2 of a decent game I just think "oh.. yeah that was cool but I'm over it now." Apples and oranges I know I know - I just won't buy into something like that. I can't be the only one.

And yeah, mid-seasons cancellations is a good point. It'd be awful to buy two of four episodes of an episodic game when the developers suddenly pull some shit and vanish before the other 2 are released. You're playing what you paid for but that's like buying half a book. Best case scenario it's like buying 1/4 of a book every week even though you're capable of (and prefer) reading the entire thing in that same week.

I'm just whining but still, fuck that
