The Marriage Thread - Until Death Do Us Part
« on: October 12, 2016, 09:18:14 am »

Whether it be discussing your upcoming nuptials, genuflecting on your decades of experience, or simply complaining about your significant other, this topic is for anyone who's got an opinion on marriage.

If you're looking to discuss the subject of gay marriage, there's some excellent discourse over in the gender and sexuality thread about this subject.

If you're looking to discuss the role of religion in marriage, I recommend the religion and spirituality thread for various opinions.

If you're looking to complain about how your wife just spent two hundred dollars on a juice maker that you know she's going to stuff in a cupboard in three months, you're my kind of people.

Sorry to be a little bitter, by my mind jumps directly to divorce for obvious reasons.
But!  The divorce rate has actually been going back down finally since ~2000...  Maybe a reaction from people my age being more cautious about the commitment?  Whatever the reason, that makes me happy and a bit hopeful.

I'd like to get married and start a family someday.  I think it's basically a requirement for adoption, and reasonably so.  But it's scary, of course.
Even scarier than the growing concern of my parents :P  Which isn't a good reason to rush into anything, obviously, a union based on that would be likely to break.

Marriage, just say no.

Weirdly enough I support the right of everyone to get married, even though I think no one should.

Yay! Somebody linked to my thread!

Even though I'm fairly sure I'm asexual, a deep (if that is the right word) and fairly permanent emotional relationship with another human being sounds like a nice thing, ergo I might marry somebody, although only because most people want to get married. My pie in the sky is that I'd meet somebody else who is also looking for that.

Which is my convoluted way of saying that marriage is indeed distinct from sexuality, and that I approve of this thread existing (as opposed to "I already made a thread for this! >:(").

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Edit: "looking for that", where "that" is the same thing that I am looking for. Seemed a bit opaque to me, rereading it.

Agreed, it's a mistake everyone needs the opportunity to make.

Yeah, I'd have to say I'm not a fan. Was married 10 years, and the latter 6 of them were pretty bad.

I'm not anti-marriage per se, but it's just not for me. Especially as a polyamorist.

I'm not against marriage per se. I just think that married people should not be allowed to have children. Divorce first, then have children. No kid should have to go trough their parents' marriage breaking apart while growing up.

Pffffft-

That's a good one.

...wait, you were serious? Not every marriage breaks up via divorce. Plus, there is something good about having more than one parent, something that might not be required, but is certainly not something that should be taken away.

Divorce is also not the end of the world for a kid. My parents divorced, and my kids came through our divorce without being fucked up. Yes, they're sometimes sad about it. But it's a good life lesson -- things happen, you cope, you adapt and you move on.

It's also a good life lesson imho, in that it's okay to end a relationship when it's broken, and not just keep it on life support because "that's what you're supposed to do".

As I've already mentioned twice in the other thread, single parent households are very bad predictors of child outcomes.  My parents divorced but fortunately I was already seventeen when they started living separately.

The second sentence commits the fallacy of "proof by example," AFAICT.

When I picture myself married, all I can think of are stupid arguments and incompatibilities that only become apparent when you're living with someone.

Stupid arguments and incompatibilities are what make it magical!

But seriously, the key is to ensure that:
1. You know what part of your personality pisses people off, and
2. You know what part of your partner's personality does the same

Make sure you match up on this, and you can double down on ridding yourself of people or things you don't want around you. Case in point, my wife and I are both seriously not into pets. In my opinion, the only good type of animal inside your house is the one you serve on a plate.
