scribes wont write, fishery dwarf freaks out for no reason... ??
« on: September 22, 2016, 01:58:34 am »

OK,  I am driving a vanilla fortress right now, but my scribes just stand around doing nothing in the library (there are over a dozen books written by visitors, and plenty of quires).

does anyone know why they arent copying the books like good little scribes, despite my assigning 4 copies minimum on the library?

Also-- why did a fisher dwarf suddenly go bananas in the hallway, despite being in good spirits, and not having any grudges?

1. Do you have chairs and tables available for them to work?
2. Why not ;)

yes i do.  I have quite a few tables and chairs in there, enough that dwarves are eating in the library.

Upon viewing the fisherdwarf's thoughts page, apparently she had an argument--- but she beat up 4 different people, including a visitor.

Are your scribes suitable for the task? As far as I understand, some traits make them rather unsuitable, such as deeming knowledge to be useless.
I think there's a bug whereby a single blocked job stalls everything quire related. You could try to forbid all books and quires, unpause, pause, and then unforbid them again. It only has a small chance of being successful, but the effort is limited.

Hm, I've had a goblin mercenary start fistfights in the tavern despite having no assigned performers or tavern keepers (so alcohol shouldn't be a factor). They eventually got their head punched in by a visitor :(

Dorfs can still get into fights without alcohol, but booze makes it much more frequent. The (non booze) cases I've seen have been triggered by an argument (in one case a merchant got into an argument with a dorf, attacked the dorf, got his toe nail hurt in retaliation, and the caravan packed up and left...).

There is bug concerning library.

Basically after you manufacture a lot of scrolls and quires and set up library properly (chests, bookcases, tables and chairs) there is a chance that scribe will write down copy of a book or scroll.

Unfortunately, as per bug, if they go drinking or eating or whatever while writing, they rarely resume their job (they do, sometimes).
So the book and scroll are sitting idle and so is the scribe.

Solution:
Forbid all the scrolls and books in the library. Unpause. Pause again and unforbid.

They should start working at once.
Works every time.

Also remember to increase the number of copies on library screen to like 5 or something.

I've had dwarves get in arguments, get broken limbs, and afterwards enjoy every second of having had that argument.

They'll even go back and start more, with similar results.

Ok I really don't know why my scribes WONT copy books.

I have double checked-- they have the "Values knowledge" attribute, they have plenty of material to copy, plenty of materials to make copies with, and I have repeatedly forbidden and unforbidden every single quire, scroll, and codex in the fortress.

I even went so far as to assign them to a burrow, on top of the library, and to lock them in.

No dice.

Toady didnt assign it a hidden labor or something did he?

For some reasons my scribes just stopped copying books as well.

When I look into the bookcases all the items stored there are marked as TSK.
Perhaps the game querries 50 books to be copied and just goes stupid?
I might lower the number of copies from 5 to 2 and see what happens.

My dwarves wont even TRY to copy them.  They just want to read them instead.

If all books are TSK:ed I'd check the DF version. A bug causing constant tasking of books (and quires and other zone items) was fixed in 0.43.04, so it's still present in the latest LNP supported one (0.43.03).

Mine isn't lnp. I am using the latest 64bit Linux version.

The only modification I am running is a graphics pack.  I can savescum the save and revert the graphics pack to eliminate it from consideration, but I doubt that is the culprit.  We'll see though.

Does the library consider the 4 copies per book, or total?

It took me a while to figure out that the "desired writing material" setting includes both sheets and books. It should pretty much always be set to a really high number.
