That eye suggestion works for me, though I might suggest using specialized legos instead - less definition, but easier to replace, move about, etc, I think. either way, or both. Maybe it doesn't actually matter ... hmm ...

Digital cameras look very much like ordinary film cameras but they work in a completely different way. When you press the button to take a photograph with a digital camera, an aperture opens at the front of the camera and light streams in through the lens. So far, it's just the same as a film camera. From this point on, however, everything is different. There is no film in a digital camera. Instead, there is a piece of electronic equipment that captures the incoming light rays and turns them into electrical signals. This light detector is one of two types, either a charge-coupled device (CCD) or a CMOS image sensor.

ccd and cmos work similarly, and could be an excellent basis for the digital eye. Of course, it means that, if there are blind spots for those devices (things that the device doesn't read, for example, or things that cause the device to malfunction) then they wold affect the eye as well.

Only thing that really changes there is he can build larger eyes with greater capacity and possibly repair them faster, assuming materials are available. And it's not just another nanite specialization but rather being by product of factory swarm. Which on the other hand requires him having blueprint available or knowing exactly how to build more. In terms of gameplay machanics it doesn't make difference beyond reconstructing eyes being conscious effort. Nanite specialization would be automatic.

Squad 1: now that the building is clear, it's time to move on to one of those high activity areas. Shift to mobility form and move out. For future reference, I'll control Artillery since I don't have any spare clones.

Squad 2: continue scanning for targets at long range, but keep a sonic sensor out for anything that might be closing in.

Artillery: Swarmbots will move in ahead of squad one and begin IDing armed targets. After which, they will drop their payload/detonate on said targets. Fliers will regroup with squad 1 and begin scanning for hostiles in a radius of a hundred meters. Ground drones will move in behind squad 1 and use data from the fliers to dismantle heavy armor with a gray goo barrage.

I feel like I need a bit more details on the exact injury Alex's hands received. Sorry to pry, but that's one unit down to 60% combat ability, and I'd like to regain as much of that as I can get away with.

What I mean to ask is, do the hands themselves still move? What I got from the description is that he lost use of the fingers, so no more grip action, as it were. If we were to, say, permanently affix the sword to his hand (with steel wire, duct tape, whatever), would he be able to use it? Sure, no fancy twirling or changing grip but it's at least something. Guns are likely out of the question. I knew I should have installed electronic triggers on those things. >_>

Also grenades. Can he pull the pins on the grenades that are still on him, since the thumbs still work? It's less efficient, but he could deploy TOC smoke around himself if need be... or pull the pins on the frags and hug the nearest badguy.

the individual parts, yes. Not that hard to build and put together, simple air tanks, metal piping, butterfly valve, air pressurizer, some KONE ultra rope, a grappling hook. you get the idea.
Like a mini pneumatic spud gun.
