Bork, we don't need an introduction thread. It's a needless and frankly segregating thing. It enforces a hierarchy on the forums, which we already mostly avoid with only having escaped lunatics and bay watchers.

It's just so much better to have a forum where you can just jump in and start (shit)posting without having to conform (too much, we do have some unspoken rules I guess) to the pecking order.

Posting here is optional. How will somebody drop in to a thread already in progress and introduce themselves without going offtopic?

They don't introduce themselves? Like pretty much everyone bar a few exceptions? (grisha5)

Just get in and start shitposting about whatever the current topic is.

I have never seen that from anyone who wasn't:

1) Banned within the day
or
2) Posting self promotion material

Also we don't really yell at people for shitposting here? And derail's only really frowned in specialized threads like in Forum Games, Play With Your Friends, Modding and so on. GD's mega-threads is run on derails.

Does this forum really have enough newcomers to warrant a topic for introductions?
Plus this is the lower forum. People making a new account here will probably look at the upper forums anyway.

Then maybe you should make this topic in the upper forum at least?
I'm certain most newcomers will miss it if its hidden in the lower forums.

Someone has been drawn to the allure of having their name at the start of a big thread. I think many who arrive here are guilty of the same at some point though.

Hi, I'm new here. Followed DF since 2d though.  :D

A thread purely for new members may not have much use. Another forum I use has a "Comings & Goings" thread both for new members introducing themselves and for longer time members to notify the regulars about their, well, comings and goings. A nice way to know who's around or not and always great when that old-time community member comes in and announces himself to be back. Brings some more cohesiveness to the community.

Hello everyone, I'm Lordsservent. I've been watching this place for about 3 years now, and I've decided to join after seeing everything you have posted here. I look forward to getting to know this madhouse, and become a part of this varied and very fun community.
