I guess I should have clarified more. My miners are all trained in engraving so that's kinda what I meant. It's not even showing the designation marker on the rock wall, so that makes me think it doesn't meet the criteria.

By extension, this means that you cannot carve fortifications in clay or dirt - you can only carve them in stone.

Or constructed walls. That works too.

Also make sure the miners aren't assigned to a burrow, or that said burrow contains the wall you want to carve the fortification into.

None of the above, actually. To get a fortification you can:

1. Construct it directly using b-C-F
2. Construct a wall, then carve it into a fortification
3. Smooth a natural stone wall, then carve it into a fortification

I have done this.  You can't engrave constructed walls (add a picture to them), but you can carve fortifications.  It's a nice way of getting a floor on top of above-ground fortifications.  Toady has mentioned (in one of his FotF replies, I believe) that he might remove the engraving restriction at some point, but he hasn't committed to it yet.

Another possibility is that they are prioritizing mining jobs over smoothing/engraving? Do you have some mining jobs active also? The way they prioritize is sometimes arcane and strange.
