My main issue is understanding the cultures at play
I think firstly it has to be noted that Alith is a pretty small continent. And by small I mean it's about the size of Westeros, which in turn is 3/4th of Australia.
The planet is also pretty small, or at least the known world is.
Might be a copout but people who sail too far just disappear.
I mean, it's still a magical world. Maybe it IS flat.
Alith is smol but considered the second biggest landmass of the known world
In the past it was inhabited by various intelligent species in small principalities. The exact history is lost to the ages but it was still known what the extinct races were like
There were the nightwardens, which are fair, thin humanodis with solid black eyes and hair. They live in the mountainous region of Alith, underground.
And a few other people I'm too lazy to list
Humans did not live on Alith in the past, they came from beyond fhte sea.
Well, they didn't exist for a while.
At some point an increase in magical potency came to Alith (nobody really knew about this except the nagas and then, two thousand years later, the humans) which allowed the nagas to invade hold the other races as their vassals
They built many great cities and named the continent as Ahl-Lith
And later, Alith
They attempt to conquer most of the known world with their magic but were not able to conquer the humans.
Some times later Prince Tavar Venghai saw a vision in his dreams that he would become the emperor of the known world
He attempted to usurp control from his father but was captured and exiled
Taking his loyal soldiers he sailed to Alith and raised an insurgency against the nagas
Due to the Naga Prince's force being spread thin and him beggaring the empire with his tyrannical rule, the empire soon fell and retreated back to the depths
The Tavaric Empire was founded and then crumbled after three generations
But before that, it conquered most of the known world
House Venghai took many wards from those it has conquered and established the House system. By granting land and legitimacy to its vassals it had hoped to satisfy them.
But back to the Empire. It crumbled after the last Venghai was assasinated three generations later. Humans came to be the dominant race on the known world and established the five kingdoms on Alith and many much more outside

The five kingdoms were the Greenfount, Wex, Factotum, Stormsong and Garland, named after their founding houses. Only House Wex and House Garland survived to this day.
At some point House Venghai returned to Alith (from the conquered Sultanate) and renaming themselves as House Tavar, conquered Alith with the help of the nigthwardens. Again the Empire crumbled soon after but House Tavar survived and surrendered.
This was a century from the start of the story
After the crumbling of the Empire the nightwardens kidnapped some of House Tavar but the house itself refused to do anything about it and strongly dissuaded others from pursuing the matter further. And the nightwardens kept to themselves under some pact with the humans

I take the approach that the bad art has to go somewhere. Sitting down and drawing a bunch of crap is necessary in order to remind oneself (subconsciously, even) what crap is and avoid it in the future.

Well it'd be great if I was actually making any progress.

I go through weeks where I want to throw my tablet like a Frisbee, break my laptop like a stick, or bite my stylus in half. It happens. If you keep going, it will eventually get better. You know it does. It just always feels like everything will be terrible forever when you're in a slump.

If things continue feeling terrible, though, it might be worth intentionally accruing one day of debt (or doing a really simple doodle) to do something else and unwind. I had to put a piece down the other day and just not think about it for a day or so in order to not burn out on it (the good old "this looks literally exactly the same as everything else I ever do why can't I be original" blues).

Whatever the case, I reckon you're improving and I can't quite adequately convey how impressed I am when I realise you've been doing this for a full year. Keep it up?
