Dwarf247 - A 24/7 Dwarf Fortress Stream
« on: July 09, 2016, 11:59:47 am »

Seaon 2 is running right now!

Check out the stream: https://www.twitch.tv/dwarf247
Check out the blog: http://dwarf247.com/

Dwarf247 is a 24/7 live stream of Dwarf Fortress.
It runs on 1FPS.(4.6 rl days an ingame year).

Season 3 is upcomming!

I learned much from the last seasons.
The response was great and people seem to like the concept.
The most important lesson is that watching me fail another fort is not entertaining enough. People check in but interest is fading and i do understand the reasons.

Thats why im already preparing Season 3, a huge change in concept. Its another experiment, even more crazy than the basic 24/7 fort.

Check the blog at http://dwarf247.com/?p=113 to get an early preview of the upcoming season.

Application for the first challenger is starting this week and will be announced in a new thread.

The first day of Season 1 started "fun".
Within the first few days a woodworker just dropped her axe into a lake and the expedition leader obviously lost a battle with an oaken log and broke his leg. Maybe i shouldnt have packed that much booze on embark....

humm...

I don't understand that 1FPS thing you speak of.
Do you play DF for a year, then let it broadcast on twitch at 1fps or what ?

Nope, the session is live.
You can set an FPS cap on DF so it runs slower by default. I did this and set it to the slowest possible setting.

Just check it out, it runs right now and people seem to like it.
Just dont expect a stream you can watch through. Its more a "check back a few times a day" thing to see whats up.

It would be interesting for you to set the screen to "follow" one of the dwarves while its running, so people who check the stream will be able to see what they're doing at any point.  Also, if you zoom in a little, then as the dwarf moves, different parts of the map will be revealed or hidden, which increases the "but I can't see what's happening over there!" type of thinking, which increases curiosity.

If you start making the stream more personal for that dwarf, it will be much like that movie "The Truman Show".

That sounds great, but the more i think of it i cant come up with a job for that dwarf. Most of the daily duties are very repetetive for a lone dwarf. And then hes sleeping a long time. It would need a dwarf that comes around much and doesnt sit in one place to often.

Maybe some kind of guard on duty that patrols the fort?

It is some days now and the dwarfs didnt starve.
Also people seem to like the stream. There was never a point with zero viewers and some seem to run the stream in the background all day.
I call that success.

Right now im thinking about adding a macro that lets us see different levels of the fort sometimes.

I upgradet the stream today by a script i wrote just for the 24/7 fortress.

It is focusing the game for 30 seconds to the main view, then following a random named unit for 15 seconds.

This gives us a much deeper insight into the fortress and keeps the screen from looking like nothing is happening.

Right now there is some odd behavior of the graphics at 1fps. I already have a script in mind that should fix that.
If im successfull we will be able to run the gfps over the fps and so have a smooth fort at 1 fps.

Stay tuned for more changes.

With the addition of a little script written for us by a member of the DFHack community we now have the gui running at 15 fps while the game still runs at 1 fps. This makes it look much smoother and keeps the gui from bugging out on us.

The stream is a great success even in this state, but i now see that its not enough. People want to get involved and im willing to do that.
So here is my vision of what the stream shall become over time:

  • 16x16 embark
  • 300 dwarfs
  • Community driven through chat commands as much as possible

Thats a fierce dream, but i already have some ideas how to do it.

These are the goals that i can imagine beeing fulfilled within the next month:
  • get the game on a dedicated server capable of running the 64bit version for the next season
  • get an automatic overview over all units within the fort
  • get the viewers in control of the view

You can help to achive this by watching the stream, following the channel, sharing it and donating via patreon. (see details in the channel)

Honestly, if you're going to do this, I recommend you go over to Beam, and use the FTL protocol which can do streaming with less-than-1 second of latency, and supports interactive controls vs. typing commands in chat.

Disclaimer:: I worked at Beam and built most of the initial implementation of FTL from scratch.

Fucking hell man, you aren't just getting the short end of the stick, you're being beaten with it.

Is your plan really to flush water into hell, and have the CARP marines fight them without threat of flame or disease?  If so, you are awesome, and one of the greatest DF military visionaries I've seen yet ( not that I've seen that many, or any, for that matter )

That actually sounds great!
I can imagine doing many things as chat commands, but there are some instances where they wont do.
I'll have a look into this.

Thanks for the feedback.
