OK, so Scotland is using a version of MMP to elect it's own parliament. Which shows the difference therefore between a proportional system and a winner-takes-all system: the winner takes all system is delivering an almost 100% landslide, vs a minority government when it's done based on proportionality. Clearly, if there was one FPTP seat per voter, things would be completely proportional, but proportionality drops off as electorates get bigger.

Your point is interesting, but I don't think he applies to the US as much. If scale was the issue, we'd expect to see a lot more third parties in state senate and houses. We DO actually see more of them: 4 out of 7383 state rep and senators, as opposed to 0 in Congress, but it's still not exactly much.

The closest the US has to a regional party is Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party but they are just democrats with a different name.

The Vermont Progressive Party begs to differ. They do pretty well, too.

The North Dakotan Democratic-NPL (Nonpartisan League) Party qualifies under that criterion, too.  For that matter, technically, all Republican and Democrat affiliates are technically state parties with a national-level superorganization, even the ones that weren't created by mergers.  Certainly, there's a world of difference between a West Virginia Democrat and a Massachusetts Democrat, and that's reflected in the organization schema that has separate parties for each state.  At least on paper, they just caucus together.  As a practical matter, the national organization is the tail that wags the dog, but c'est la vie.

More than that, the Independence Party of Minnesota managed a decent showing until 2014, and there are a couple parties that have secured one or two state seats here and there: the Libertarians, Working Families, Conservative Party of New York, and the Independence Party of New York.  Other than that, though, the VPP comes out on top with a tenth of the Vermont Senate and a bit over 3% of the House.

The Socialist Alternative may be up and coming in Washington state.  They claim to have had strong influence in winning the fight for a $15 minimum wage in Seattle, which happened shortly after they got a candidate elected to city council on that platform.

The Carolina Supremacy Party will have a good showing once the flying vampire squid increase our representation (by eating the major party candidates and officials).

I'm pretty sure squid breed faster than humans, so we can use them to stuff the ballot by increasing their intelligence until they pass the Turing test and then declaring them each individually a shell corporation of the party with fictive personhood and thus suffrage under the 14th Amendment.

My concern with that is then we'd just become a tool of Big Cephalopod.

The M-DFLP actually has majorities and control of the governors house half the time.  No one else comes close.  Sure the libertarians elected a governor but so did the WWE.

This election man, this is probably the most entertaining presidential election I have ever heard of, let alone witnessed.

All is going according to my personal likes, and I have NO complaints about who we have as nominees.

This election is the first in a long time that there is a clear choice on the ballots.

Time to make America great again, starting with the supreme court.
