The World Cup ran pretty well i guess. did the situation change that dramatically in two years? even in 2004 while i traveled there you could almost physically feel the danger weighing on your shoulders. and i felt that even before getting mugged at gunpoint in the middle of the day in Copacabana street (Which is a main street there).

hint: Rio was always a megatrash tourist trap. Now its just a hellish megatrash tourist trap. I don't think anyone in BR takes Rio (the city, not the state) seriously except for its gigantic crime rates and tourism, except maybe for a tired and archaic artistic class that still thinks Rio is relevant in any other way after the capital got moved.

If you want to have fun in BR, forget Rio, go to Bahia or some of the sweet ass beaches in the north. You'll spend a fair bit less money, enjoy some real paradise-eske places, get to see tons of pretty women around who aren't just prostitutes disguised as beach girls and probably not get mugged. You can also go to the south (way south) and basically walk around mini central europe and enjoy some of the best wine and ale I've ever tasted and some pretty great hotels and resorts. If you want to buy shit, go to São Paulo where you can find literally everything ever made by mankind for sale, apart from maybe nuclear weapons and particle accelerators, we don't have those for sale yet, sorry. If you're feeling extra adventurous, go to the amazon and enjoy getting eaten by jaguars, crocodiles, mosquito swarms, pink dolphin things and spiders as big as your chest.

Of course, the rest of the world thinks BR is Rio and basically nothing else, and its partly our government's fault, despite BR being basically  half a continent.

Yep, I lived in Floripa for seven months- visited Ouro Preto, Belo Horizonte, Blumenau, Iguaçu. Never saw Rio, and only saw São Paulo's airport. Don't understand the Rio hype, to be honest.

I spent around 2 months in Brazil, entered in Foz do Iguacu then started going north along the coast through florianopolis, curtiba, Sao Paulo, Rio, Porto Seguro, Salvador, Recife, finished it in Jericoacuara and from there returned inland to Bahia to Lencois/Chapada diamantina, then to Brasilia, Pantanal and crossed the "death train" to Bolivia where i went into a tributary of the Amazonas where i indeed seen crocodiles, got eaten by mosquitos, swam with pink dolphins, petted an Anaconda and a captured baby jaguar.

Even though most of my time in Brazil was outside the big cities and i admit i haven't seen much of them, Rio stroke me as the most interesting. Sao Paulo was just as dangerous if not more at the time (I remember they were not stopping at red lights because it was apparently too dangerous) and lacked the charm, Brasilia is too spread out and impossible for backpackers and i was only transitioning through Salvador so i barely seen it but from what i did see it wasn't anything special.

Being under control by a pro state economic control group of politicians who disguised their ever increased control over the economy as socialism (with the unconditioned of corrupt worker unions, despite the fact that unemployment rates are now fuckhuge, lol) that also used social issues as leverage to increase their power and thus allowed corruption to spread uncontrolled because it benefited them... Tends to do that.

The only difference now is that multiple schemes basically blew over and lots of people who thought themselves untouchable are now trembling inside their luxurious apartments, which doesn't mean that much, but I do hope the shitty time BR will have until it recovers will beat some sense into the majority of population and make them stop believing that anyone who says pro-socialism and pro-state control things are somehow angels incarnate who can be trusted with any amount of power.

So, terrorism. A group of would-be terrorists was arrested this week. (link is in brasilian portuguese because good luck finding any actual news about this country in english)

They were more like fanboys than real terrorists, but still. They were caught after the utterly moronic move of ordering AKs through the internet. It becomes even more moronic because they lived close to the border with Paraguay, where most contraband comes in from (meaning they could've rather easily acquired untraceable guns). They are currently being held in isolated cells and cannot mingle with regular prisoners (I guess in order to prevent them from recruiting).
