QOL jingamathigg
« on: July 01, 2016, 09:09:28 pm »

I just want to request two little things - that the time-forward take place upon embarking, not prior to loading up the site selection screen, and to be able to esc-out of embark back to site selection (in case the civ you picked has no access to iron, and therefore prevents you from embarking with an anvil)

Logically the map will change in 2 weeks (practically not much, but still). I've known adventurer sites to change hands in a hostile takeover during those two weeks. The game would probably get confused and crash if you ended up embarking in a goblin site (most amusing as it may be).

hmm, then why not put that process entirely under the hood and tack it onto the end of world gen/retiring/whatever?

When i'm canvassing for interesting fortress sites by details the embark viewmodes can't show me, having a mandatory 3-5min standdown between attempts is quite the nuisance  :(

What do you mean? You know the world keeps going while you're playing, right? Every new fortress, adventure, takes place after the previous one. The same world so you need to add two weeks in between every game.

Why two weeks and not 2 days or 6 weeks or something, is a question for Toady though.

That's what i'm saying. At the time of retiring a fort/adventurer, part of the 'unloading' process adds 2 weeks to the world's time. Same thing would happen at world gen - once generated, the world would do the 2 week progression thing before even letting you select it for a game mode.

That way you keep that elapsed time but avoid the chore of having to wait while it redoes it if you have to cancel out of an embark.

Imagine. Game Over! You Lose! Rage! Followed by..."please wait 10 minutes before switching off DF, I'm just updating..."

Waiting to play the game is excitement building. Waiting to switch off is just annoying. I mean, yeah, it's all annoying, but honestly I think the current set up is the least annoying version.

Well, isn't losing supposed to be fun, anyway? if i was that mad i'd probably just walk away from the computer altogether, so those extra couple of minutes while the world processes your departure wouldn't matter at all.

And anticipation can be good... in moderation. having to sit through the process 5 times in 20 minutes because i forgot something essential/my embark area isn't what i'm looking for afterall/my civ has no iron and therefore no anvils/other things, is just frustrating.

plus, i figure, if you want to keep the world you've just been playing in and don't want to revert your save, you can't have lost that painfully. If i was retiring a fort or adventurer and planning to do more with that world, then those extra couple of minutes wouldn't bother me at all.

When I retire I want to switch my computer off and go do something else. Having it hang for minutes is annoying and means DF is eating into my private time as opposed to DF shortening it's own time by making you wait at the start.

Oh, I agree with the second part of your suggestion of course. Being forced back to the menu is very annoying. I didn't know that it's not possible escape out from the equipment screen.
