So what are you suggesting? Instead of nobles sending my blacksmith to jail for not making him a solid platinum dildo, or a dwarf attacking another and going to jail, that a prompt should come up explaining the case and ask what should be done?

Because that would be great.

Weren't the nobility the judges back in middle ages? because that's roughly when DF is set and I know toady plans on allowing the player to hold noble positions so I guess that would be included... maybe...

I think Cormack is talking about adventure mode not fortress mode.

It depended - in towns there were judges, clergy was only tried by church courts, and in England there was a jury system in the 12th century with jury actually uncovering the facts of the case. Otherwise nobility were judges or delegated their authority to someone else.
