Beak dogs, and frog demons seems intelligent, but how to force them to haul labors ?

I have been unable to get them to haul so far. I suspect it's simply how DF treat them.

the nymph i bought from an elven caravan wouldnt do any labors till she petitioned to join my fortress, now she serves in my Military, because reasons (mostly because of therapist)

I suspect that the intelligent creatures have a tag off or something. I picked up some blizzardmen that were listed as pets and purchasable, but at the same time were citizens in every way except that they could not be nobles. The same is not true of frog demons, they look like citizens but don't act like them at all. Some of them have labors enabled, at least according to therapist, but they never seem to actually do any of them. I can only assume there is another tag that the frog demons need in order to be functional as resident.

It seems that being classified as a pet causes certain behaviors, even if the creature itself is fully intelligent.  This is annoying, but there might be some way to dfhack around it.

Frog demons should at least mine and cut trees, I activated the labor through the original df interface and not therapist.


It is intended that they cannot be noble, it's the SLOW_LEARNER tag that does this.

So i was over in the domestic pets thread, looking up how to add nymphs as pets to succubi, because I have been totally unable to capture any in the wild, or get any in trade and wanted to build a nymph terrarium for my fort to enjoy, when I noticed that frog demons are added as pets, minions and pack. Could that possibly be causing the oddity we see with frog demons? Some frog demons are pets, some minions, some pack mules?

Out of curiosity, how are the blizzardmen pets? They don't seem to have any of the required tags. Are they added via DFHack?

That's possible with some text editing, you'll have to open onLoad.init inside the raws folders and search for 'addpettociv' and add your own.

By the way I started a fort and the frog demon was the patron.

Adding my experience here. It seems that while the Frog Demon and Sea-Green Fiend I had with me at embark can be assigned labors and function as full citizens (I made them my military), any new frog demons (or decay brutes) I have gotten since then (via migrants or purchase) cannot be assigned anything. I am not sure what would cause that discrepancy, but if anyone knows of something I can do to my RAWs to make them work better, I would love to know it. I really like the idea of an all frog demon/decay brute/fiend military squad.

I looked at my frog demons in GM editor mode with DFHack, discovered something. The frog demon I embarked with, as well as the frog demons born in my fort, all count as historical figures and have historical figure IDs. The frog demons that come in with migrants, however, do not count as historical figures and have IDs of -1. Finally, when I turn on "allow setting labors on anyone" in Dwarf Therapist, I can enable labors on the frog demon babies born in my fort, but not on the frog demon babies/children/adults that migrated. The Fiend I embarked with also has a historical figure ID.

I have no idea if this specific ID has any effect on setting labors, but there it does seem to indicate the problem lies with how the creatures that arrive with migrants are treated. The game seems to consider them pets in this case. I need to try buying some from merchants and summoning some from the circle to see how those are treated, but my guess is that there is something involved in their generation that makes them count as pets and prevents them from being used as citizens.
