The perfect arrow defense?
« on: June 07, 2016, 07:44:04 pm »

If I build a wall, and then engrave it, do I get to shoot out of the wall? I want to make a tunnel that has rooms that I can position archers on the other side of the wall and have them shoot at enemies.

Hi!

Unfortunately, you can only engrave natural walls, not constructions.  However, you can build fortifications, which should enable you to set that up.

Ok thank you!

On a side note, what happens if you don't fulfill a queens mandates?

Probably not what he means, given that fortifications allow return fire from ranged beasts and elite marksgoblins. (Though note, you can carve fortifications into built walls)

I think you perhaps might be able to pit marksdwarves into ceilingless walls surrounded by fortifications and have them shoot out with return fire stopped by said wall, but I have not tested this.

Mandates: Someone will get hammered or jailed, probably. (By Captain of the guard)

Hi!

I engrave fortifications into constructed walls all the time.

I did not know about this.  Learn something new every day...

That is new in... 0.42 (I think). Before that it was not possible.

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.

One dwarf will be punished, eventually, for each mandate. This could take the form of a beating, if you have a hammerer, or imprisonment, if you have a jail, or possibly the queen whacking the person if you have neither (haven't tried the last one.)

It may have even been in as long as fortifications. Someone would have to load up an old version and check.

b-C-w = Construct a Wall.
d-F = "Carve" Fortification on either a Smooth Wall, or Constructed Wall.

Engrave is only possible on a natural Smoothed Wall or Smoothed Floor.

Although Toady mentioned that he might consider adding the ability to engrave constructed wall in one of the recent Future of the Fortress Q&A.

Carving fortifications uses the engraving labor. Nobody mentioned actual engravings.

Good to know about the Q&A, though.

When designing fortifications keep in mind that dwarves that are not highly skilled in archery/crossbow will only shoot through fortifications if they are standing next to them.  So instead of a room behind the fortifications, a hallway may be better.

Instead of the squad move command, a little bit of micro can set several tiles of burrow, and have the squad schedule order a defend burrow, so they will happily occupy the burrow tile(s).

Or you can just construct a fortification directly. I believe it's b-C-F? It should be easy enough to find.

That results in a fortification without a ceiling on the z+1 which usually results in marksdwarf jumping over the said fortification.
