Anyone else crashing?
« on: June 05, 2016, 09:31:01 am »

Hi everyone.

Does anyone else have a crashing problem? My game crashes every half hour or so with the message that "Dwarf Fortress.exe has stopped working". No other explanation given for the crash, no error code or anything. That pops up and the game shuts down.

I am using the Starter Pack Launcher (PyLNP).

Thanks for any help you have, its really annoying and I have lost progress in the game again and again over and over again.

Its probably dfhack or a mod doing something it shouldnt. All you can do is turn mods off until it stops.

Personally Ive noticed that the game crashes when I use the latest version of starter pack launcher when I place out chairs in a very quick fashion (a graphical error according to the crash log). I almost always do a legendary dining room/meeting hall for my dwarves and it includes a hell of a lot of tables and chairs, which is place out in bulks, so Ive gotten rather quick at it.

There have been a lot of reports of TWBT causing crashing. Try turning it off. :3

Got any trees intersecting with constructions?

I'm using LNP and i got crashes until i A) kept trees away from my walls and B) deleted TWBT. I'm not sure which was causing crashes but i did both and now neither bother me any more. In any case keeping trees from the walls is good practise.

Text Will Be Text. IIRC you'll find it in the df folder under "plugins" Find it and delete it!

You don't have to delete it, just change the render mode setting. Disabling the multilevel rendering alone might help.

Unless he's playing the v.0.40.XX series, which he really shouldn't be, that's no longer a problem. Trees can coexist with dwarves in harmony. Until the first steel axe is forged, but then at least thank Armok the dwarves are winning.

No, there are (unconfirmed?) reports of tree related crashes in the newer versions as well, so the crash bug might not be completely squashed, but definitely significantly reduced.
Apart from that, trees near walls can allow climbing access for nasty critters.
Furthermore, trees, in particular cavern ones, frequently grow to block access to areas, especially if you've cut the original lot down.
Finally, trees act as death traps for dorfs "fleeing" from keas and other undesirable wildlife.

There's one bug report with a crash which the reporter assumes is trees, but could be anything as the save hasn't been checked yet. Other than that there's the usual board wide rumour spreading (Is that tree bug fixed, my game crashed? - My game crashed, someone said it was trees - There are reports all over the place of trees causing crashes, etc).

Tree bug was fixed, you can still build in trees, so it's at the very least still partially fixed.

It was me who reported the tree crash in 42.06. It was fairly unreliably reproducible so theres no guarantee it was trees (although the crashes still occurred after TWBT was deleted). I'll go out on a tree limb and let the trees grow near my fortifications again, and see if any crashes can be observed again. Since i've kept the trees from the walls i've had no issues but that might be "this rock keeps away tigers, look you can't see any tigers around here can you" logic. LNP is a conglomeration of a variety of packs and mods and is unstable by definition... I wish DF had a crash log so i could get a better idea whats causing crashes...

You can turn off TWBT in the Lazy Newb Pack dialog, then load the game and see if it solves the problem:
"Lazy Newb Pack" window>"Graphics" tab>"Choose" tab>"Print Mode" button (Choose "Print Mode" 2D instead of TWBT)
