My Dwarf Fortress Youtube Series
« on: June 03, 2016, 04:40:52 pm »

Didn't know where exactly to post this, so I just threw it here.
I'm only three episodes in but I'd love for people to name my dwarves and give advice about what I should do.

I also do another game but that's a different story.

Channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/Sollision
DF Playlist - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJR74dtzRdeek6FGfRKBvu2VPmKw7kwn3
Episode One - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vc6Voh_EZw4

I'd love to have more subscribers and support to my channel. :)

I was told to crosspost this, lmao.

I'm glad you fixed the music problem from your first video and I appreciate that you don't cuss (at least not so that I've noticed). I'll subscribe and watch your vids. (Or at least play them in the background while I do other things).

After making the first one I almost cries when I heard the music problem, rip.
Yeah though I don't swear in anything really.
Thanks!

One note- In ep1 you said you didn't know what flux was for. Flux is for making steel, you mix it with iron to get pig iron. Limestone and marble are two examples of flux stone.

Aha, thanks! I remember watching a video when I first started the game and they said flux was good but I forgot what for. :P

I appreciate that you don't cuss

I completely disagree. Swearing is a perfect way to express emotions. Infact I think its a bit immature to be offended by completely neutral words like fuck. Not being allowed to swear makes most shows more bland and boring.

it's also a bit immature to start an argument about something irrelevant to the topic at hand!

I like that you talk through your various discoveries about the game and reasonings through it. A lot of these questions and stops and starts would have been really relatable to me if I had these videos when I was starting out. For example, what is this trade liaison guy saying? Our fortunes rise and fall together? Can I still trade? and so on...

I'm not sure if opening with "Welcome to another crappy video" is good. Is this out of modesty? It insults the viewer, who is apparently wasting their time watching your crappy video. I'm not trying to be harsh—this is just how I'm reading the statement about "another crappy video." Now maybe you'll say you're just joking. Fair enough, but what's the joke? Are you insecure about the fact that you are making videos despite that you're obviously not an expert at the game? I hope not! because you should be proud of having something to offer even if you don't know everything.

It's also a bit immature to respond to an immature person!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

OT: I think I'll watch these when I have time, the responses seem to indicate a great series. I'm no newb, of course, but I might be able to give some good feedback.

I couldn't think at all of a good intro so I just came up with that. I'm not insecure about my videos it's just something to say, I guess.

And yeah, I've been playing DF for a long time and I'm still learning, so I plan to go through the process of the game learning with the viewers and explaining how to do things and whatnot.
If I don't understand something in-game while recording, I just pause, google it off camera, and come back to explain it in a simpler way.

@ Findulidas
I strive never to belittle anyone for cussing or otherwise. Nor do I try to control any person by not allowing them their free speech. I invite people to do good and encourage behavior that I think is kind and selfless so that I might leave the world a little better for my having been there. I think it is kind for people to refrain from using words that might introduce unwanted images into the minds of others. If that is an immature thing for me to do or want then I very glad I am immature. Heck though, I've known I've been immature ever since I started playing dwarf fortress! One can't claim he is mature if he is playing this game! Even the creator draws pictures in crayon :D

When I am grateful for something, I try to show my gratitude. It provides the encouragement needed for others to work toward higher goals. Encouraging the behavior you want to see in others is much better than trying to belittle someone for the behavior you don't want to see.

@ Sollision
My nephew and I are grateful that we can share some family time and watch your videos together. For some odd reason he likes to watch videos of dwarf fortress.

And just so you know, there is a tree blocking wagon travel to your trade depot. You'll need a clear path to the trade depot from any map edge for wagons to get there. So far so good! Keep it up!

Aha, thanks !

And, I don't know. The caravan got there fine, so it should be working? Oh well if it breaks I'll fix it on the spot. :P

I stink at explaining things, please bear with me. XD

The caravans always have some pack animals with stuff that can go anywhere (even up and down stairs) but they also have wagons that can carry a lot more stuff. The wagons are what need a clear path of 3 wide and can only go up and down ramps. If you hit shift + d (like you did in the video) it measures from the depot where the wagon can go (indicated by the green "W"). If there is no "W" all the way to the map edge you won't get wagons with trade goods and you'll get a message of something like "Their wagons have bypassed your inaccessible site"

It's okay not to have wagons though. Sometimes it is better because wagons can be bugged and can get stuck at your depot.

On a brighter note though, I'm looking forward to watching your next video.

Alright, I'll try to fix that in the next one I record then. :P Thanks for the info!

Also, I've been avoiding mining for ores simply because I don't know how to. Every fort I've had I've always gotten my ores from trading, but I want to start mining for them now. Any tips?
