[ISG] Aldryn Navar: Wizard for Hire
« on: May 22, 2016, 07:54:00 pm »

The room was cold, silent, and dark. Furniture. Pictures on the walls. Knick-knacks on shelves. The accoutrements and trappings of regular life. To a casual observer, nothing was amiss, but I am no mere casual observer, for I am a mighty magus. A mighty magus who also happened to have insider information on the house’s state of amiss-ness.

The name’s Aldryn Navar, wizard for hire. Lost items found, paranormal investigations, reasonable rates (no love potions). I was on the hunt for a missing drow by the name of Welverin Khalazza, who had vanished under mysterious circumstances. His consort, Xune, had contacted me after he disappeared and pled for me to take the case, offering me the one thing I couldn’t refuse: money.

Thus, I had made my way to Welverin’s recently-vacated house - the last place he had been seen. According to Xune, she had left the place to run an errand and Welverin wasn’t there when she returned. Her complete and utter lack of useful contextual information was mildly off-putting (particularly given her insistence on hiring a PI rather than waiting for the police to do their job), but I took the case anyway because I’m a sucker for a pretty face.

And money. I’m a sucker for money.

I conjured a small orb of light and examined my surroundings in greater detail. There was something here that could lead me in the right direction, of that I was sure. Odds were it would be something entirely mundane that had provoked the man to skip town, but I was hired to find him and I’d be damned if I wasn’t going to do just that. But where would I investigate first?

Aldryn is a versatile wizard with a litany of spells at his disposal. In addition to his mastery of fire and wind, he can divine past events from significant objects (a murder scene can be scryed with the murder weapon, for example), while hair and blood can be used to track down the person they originally came from. Given enough time, he can even compose new spells and rituals to add to his arsenal. You’ll need to use both magic and mundane investigation to piece together the many cases he will doubtless solve.

First. Examine room in detail. Note dust on objects or the absence of said dust in odd areas. Locate hair or other bodily leavings, we've been hired to locate the bugger after all.

((Wow, that art!))

Lets see. An obvious goal would be to look for a lock of hair, letting us locate him simply. There seems to be a coat rack next to the door, and its empty. It means he probably took it with him, likely left willingly. Its cold here, making it unlikely it was placed away for the summer, and there would be no reason for any of his servants, friends, or the consort herself to remove it. Its also possible I am looking too much into the details :P. In any case, its plausible we don't have to rush, his life is unlikely to be in immediate danger.

Lets check his pillow for fallen hair, seeing as he doesn't seem to have any handy hats.

You're a drow. Don't you have darkvision? Sure, it's black and white, but at least you're harder to see breaking and entering. Although that light orb does look very stylish.

Check if there are any clothes around. Those tend to have bits of the person on them. Such as skin flakes or hair or something like that.

+1 to using darkvision and finding hair/etc. We can probably at least attempt some scrying.

I would ask why fire can burn two men to death without getting hot enough to burn a book, but then I read "INEXTINGUISHABLE RUNNING KAMIKAZE RADIOACTIVE FLAMING ZOMBIE" and realized that logic, reason, and physics are all occupied with crying in the corner right now.

Might as well start with the room I was in. I dimmed the light and let my eyes adjust to the darkness, the shadows receding until the room was a collage of dull greys. As much as I loved maintaining wizardly decorum by slinging magic whenever possible, it would probably be better to avoid slinking around like a crappy thief with an obvious flashlight. The last thing I wanted was for a nosy neighbor to call the cops on suspicious ol’ me - a very real risk in a posh neighborhood like this one. With that disaster averted, I returned to slinking around like a crappy thief without an obvious flashlight.

No coat or hat on the rack. We don’t exactly get summer down here in the underground, so I suspected my mark took it with him when he left. I counted that as a good sign - proper attire is rarely a consideration when fleeing in life-or-death situations. Unfortunately, it also meant that I couldn’t pick his headwear for loose hairs. Oh, the inconveniences I suffer for the sake of the job.

I paced the room, scanning its contents. Quite an odd array of tchotchkes on display, but, being a wizard, I had seen stranger. I owned stranger, in fact. You get some funny looks when guests see an elven skull on a shelf in your study, let me tell you.

Books and pictures, nothing out of the ordinary there. Ceremonial daggers - a mainstay of drow heirlooms. Wires and gadgets? A little less common, but Welverin was an engineer of some sort. Looked like his work followed him home. I could come back and investigate those after I’d covered the essentials of magic sleuthing.

My next stop was Welverin’s bedroom. His hat might be MIA, but I was willing to bet there would be at least a few stray hairs on his pillow. I was right. I usually am (except when I’m not, but let’s just avoid bringing that up). I carefully picked out the strands, placed them in a wooden case for safekeeping, and pocketed them. Over time they’d start to lose their sympathetic connection to their owner, especially if he encountered running water, so the sooner I used them the better.
