DF Players' Computers - Polling on 32/64 Bitness
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:22:27 pm »

I am interested in what DF players use to play DF, especially for the whole "32/64 bit compatibility" thing. I will make polls here and post the results, then make a new one (maybe).

First poll: 64 bit or 32 bit?

32-bit computers have been low-end since 2006 or so and completely obsolete since, like, 2009, so I doubt you'll see many.

Even our school issued laptops are 64 bit now... People with 32 bit computers are going to have bigger problems than not being able to play Dwarf Fortress.

Half of the people selecting 32 bit (if there's actually any) will actually be saying '32 bit operating system' whereas their PC's will almost certainly be 64 bit (the other half will be correct and probably battling to play DF for more than a couple of years without their computer melting...).

Well I'm still using an old pc (Pentium D that is).
I was planning to buy a new one earlier this year but decided to wait because I'm not a gamer any more.
I only occasionally play DF and that is it. :P

Pentium D is 64 bit. At least, according to a quick Google browse.

Hopefully the only people choosing to use a 32 bit version will be the one forced to do so. There should be no upsides whatsoever.

Yeah, 64 bit compatible maybe. But I heard that CPU runs better with 32 bit windows.
I haven't tried though.

Well I'm that people.
I'd say don't bother because I will eventually buy a new pc, sooner or later since this one is showing its age and keeps shutting down on itself randomly.

Try Linux. Might get a bit more life out of the old machine and you'll be able to test 64 bit and 32 bit versions to see what works well.

I voted 64 but actually I play on two computers.  The old laptop is 32bit, an old core duo.

Yeah, 64 bit compatible maybe.

CPUs are what determines bitness. Not OSs. There is no such thing as a "64-bit compatible" CPU. The CPU has a certain bitness and that's it.

Basically only if you have a early-gen Pentium 4 or an AMD K7 or older then it's 32bit. Even most Atom-based systems are 64bit.

Some really old Intel laptop CPUs are 32bit only. By really old I mean more than ten years old.

OSX versions starting from 10.8 Mountain Lion have 64-bit kernel. Older versions can run 64bit stuff, with limitations. (This is possible because OSX itself is running on top of a microkernel, which handles the relevant parts.)

48-bit. (I didn't want my computer to be too incompatible with either standard, so I compromised...)

Funny, but a 64-bit would do the same. Larger-bit OSs can always run smaller-bit programs IIRC.

96.2% say 64-bit, and going by Shonai_Dweller's analysis, that'd be 98.1% in reality.

My 2008 iMac has a 64-bit processor. The few people with 32-bit processors could probably barely run Dwarf Fortress anyway. Anyone whose most powerful computer is still 32-bit probably deserves a new machine.
