best settings and embark situation for my machine?
« on: May 05, 2016, 07:34:53 am »

Can someone suggest what settings i should use to best fit my hardware and OS ?

CPU: Intel Celeron 64bit, E3400 2x2600 MHz <- i know, it can't use two cores
FSB: 200MHz
RAM: 4GB DDR3 @400MHz
FSB-RAM-Multiplier: 4
Graphicscard: nVidia GeForce 9800 GTX+
VRAM: 512MB
OS: WinXPHome32_SP3

i usually play 2x2 embarks on small worlds, but they tend to crash before standing a year, so i don't think it crashes due to too many used clothes cluttering the screens.

my screen resolution of 1280x1024 makes the game unplayable without TWBT, because then the menu would take up half of the screen at all times when reduced with [Tab], so i use:

PerridexisErrant's LNP 42.06.r04
settings&graphics: windowed 1280x960, TWBT, Phoebus (+ curses 640x300 as font)
utilities: Announcement Window, Dwarf TheRapist, soundsense
DFHack: "Automatic Job Assignments", "Mouse Controls", "Other Automation Plugins", "Performance Tweaks", "Workflow Production Targets"

i hope someone can help.

.06 seems solid enough to me that the crashes are surprising. If it only crashes with dfhack enabled, try disabling dfhack components one by one and see if it stops? Either way, let the guys that maintain it know

Have to agree here, must be some mod. I havent played the latest version that much but I have only crashed when rare things have happened or when my fort has gone it to several years so my old computer cant process all the stuff properly.

updating first post: OS WinXPHome32_SP3

actually i'm impressed my current fort made it through the second year with only one crash inbetween.

Question. Do you have the 3d view thingbon in LNP. Where you can see z levels below your current one.
That thing crashes the game on my laptop constantly. Nothing else does.

yes, it's always on - also it's activated by default.
i thought it was a main feature of TWBT. how do i deactivate it without deactivating the separation of graphics and text?

'multilevel 0' entered into DFhack console should turn it off without removing TWBT altogether. If that's the problem. If it's something else to do with TWBT you'll just have to switch it offb and use a less complicated tileset.

After doing that on my laptop, the game went from regularly crashing when just swapping between z levels, to going decades of time ingame without problem.

well, the game mostly crashed when building things from the b-C menu, but also sometimes when i wanted to change the settings of a stockpile and other completely unrelated "triggers".
also i got the impression that multilevel dropped the fps when there were too many items cluttering the screen on many zlevels.
i'll disable it the next time.

edit: would using printmode TWBT_LEGACY be TWBT without multilevel, or what would that be?

okay, used "multilevel 0" and besides looking weird, it went pretty well.
so i guess i have to write that command every time i start playing, but that's okay.

You can add it to the end of Dfhack.init

You can also set the # of levels shown, I have mine on 2.
Experiment, its nice.

Those construction crashes...make sure you've got enough blocks.
And maybe not designate too many things at once.
I ran into it a lot paving, fewer designations at once, stopped it.
