I know that spouses can share a bedroom, but children can too? Are you sure the parents aren't just getting deassigned?

How did we pass from inns with merry songs and happy music to temples of doom and medieval torture with so much easiness and eagerness??

Idk. All I know is that when I assign someone to a room, their kid(s) are not assigned as well, so I have to make a thorough investigation kid by kid to find out who their parents are. It´s like dorfs forget their children as soon as they get a nice home

...no.

While the kids do not "own" the room, they will sleep in it.

They may autoclaim rooms, I'm not sure.

But I always get negative thoughts for kids being away from their parents and vice versa. I always thought that was because they were sleeping away from each other. Also when assigning rooms, even when every adult have its own room, children still show as roomless

Children do not own the room, but they sleep in it.

If you are a child (or if you aren't, try to remember when you were), do you own your house? (Would you if your family owned a house?) No. The parents usually co-own the house, and the children also sleep there.

Children do not need rooms. They don't have quite the same requirements as adults, and they're normally unimportant anyway. They can be assigned bedrooms if you really want to keep them happy, but they may already get happy thoughts from sleeping in their parents' bedroom. They sure don't get unhappy thoughts from sleeping in their parents' bedroom, I've verified that.

======

The negative thoughts are a result of a lack of interaction. Give your dwarves more break time, keep them within a small social meeting place, or segregate the entire fortress into uninterconnected (relationship-wise) clans. (Last one may be a bit hard.)

Thanks, I'd been wondering about the same thing.

I think I've seen children autoclaim rooms independently, but it's not consistent and they often seem to be among the last to do so.
