"Steam is compressed into the chambers behind the cannonballs. When I pull the little protrusion on each barrel, the steam is released into the barrel. It forces the cannonball out at a high rate. The only downside is that it is impossible to reload in the field. I will need to construct a small reloading machine in my quarters on the boat."

A pneumatic cannon! Brilliant design. I'll have to take notes on that. Unfortunate you need a machine to reload it, but perhaps it can be improved.

Quirks and mannerisms don't come off as relevant to the position of a Quartermaster. For all we know, they could be a logistics expert, or a seasoned repairman, perhaps even a better sailor than the captain.
