Mineral Pop Quiz; Vanilla or Mod?
« on: April 17, 2016, 04:47:16 pm »

I'm starting to put together a little compilation mod, and found myself upon the lists for Stone & Mineral layers.  Suffice to say, I was incredibly surprised by what I found, as I'd never heard of half this stuff, much less seen it ingame.  So for a bit of sport, see if you can identify all of the following as part of Vanilla Dwarf Fortress or a Mod, without consulting any help.

Brimstone
Puddingstone
Petrified Wood
Chromite
Arsenic
Tungsten
Pitchblende
Sulfur
Uranium
Mithril
Cobaltite
Pyrolusite
Moon Silver
Native Silver
Borat
Alabaster
Borax

Wow, got all but Sulfur right because I honestly didn't even see it when reading the list. Granted, I was just looking at the stone list for color planning so  :P

Only one I didn't know was chromite. I've never had it in a fort, nor noticed it available for trade demand. Puddingstone I kind of guessed on, but it sounded familiar.

Guess I should have made this more difficult :-\  I've never seen half of these.  Plus... puddingstone?!  I mean, really?

It's got little pebbles inside like raisins. Apparently the English really like comparing such things to plum pudding, considering there's also an outdated atomic model named after it.

I got chromite wrong as well. Don't recall seeing that in my forts, even though that's found in gabbro layers (in olivine clusters), and like half my forts end up in gabbro for some reason.

I had a naturally occurring puddingstone only once, in an embark near an ocean. However, it can be acquired from a caravan. I sometimes buy funny stones, to make some variety. How many rock salt levers can one have?

It's okay. Not all of us are dwarven miners, geologists, or masons. Just the best of us.  :P

Got all save chromite also. Should have known too as I've poured over the minerals in my time modding.
