BTW, when Strife26 wrote "The alternate primary and election system has some value, but that'd require an amendment to the Constitution, which is (for good reasons) very difficult to do." he was referring to my idea for a different way to do the primaries and having instant-runoff voting in the general Presidential election with a wider field of candidates.

But as far as that goes, nothing about how you run primaries breaches the constitution, so the part about primaries is no biggie.

And in the general election, the precise nature of the per-state voting is up to the discretion of each state. So you could run the IRV vote nationally, and then have the electoral college as a mere formality tacked onto the end to comply with the Twelfth Amendment.

A number of politicians and businessmen implicated in the Unaoil corruption scandal have had documents that are probably related to those activities show up in the Panama document leak. It's interesting to see how interconnected these things are. Makes me wonder how much competition there is in the 'semi-legally launder massive amounts of money' business.

It caps the nephew of our glorious leader Jacob Zuma as well, who has definitely in no way benefitted from his uncle's power, no sir. I will be quite surprised if it doesn't reveal some awkward truths about uncle Jacob as well.

"Jacob Zuma is probably corrupt" isn't exactly news.

It strikes me as hollow that these people are mad about their prime minister's financial holdings, and less about the reasons why he has to hold them.

So you're saying that people should get upset about the hidden and confusing causes of the problem rather than the visible and simple symptoms? Surely you're not so naïve as to think that this is realistic?

This incident strikes me as similar to the Edward Snowden leak.  It is apparently not the same thing to vaguely but certainly know that something is happening as to know the specific details.  Which is fair I guess.

First he came out saying that "anyone whose name appeared in those papers should be required to explain his presence in those with the utmost detail". And "authorized" the State's prosecutor to start a judicial investigation (which does not make any sense. It's not within his power to authorize or unauthorize judicial investigations, which as the name implies, rests solely in the hands of judicial power. Not only that, but the ones to authorize judicial investigations are, also as the name implies, judges)

Then his name came up. And that's where things got really funny.

First he had no idea what was his name doing there. Then, it was a booking mistake because his late father had an enterprise. But that enterprise was in Barbados, not Panama, so he didn't think he was involved in anything with the Panama papers. Then he backtracked again and said that he was aware of having been the administrator between so-and-so-year but that afterwards his family did not have anything to do with than. Then he said that he handed the reins to his brother. Etc, etc...

Basically, the guy tells the media a new version of the underlying events every day.
