Guest breeding Science
« on: March 14, 2016, 04:41:07 pm »

So I don't know if anyone has done this work already, but if not, buckle in!

At the fortress of Flewclutch, SCIENCE! is happening!

After a bit of twiddling, I managed to net a breeding pair … of visiting bards! (Well… I got a pair of bards and, how should I say… persuaded them to marry? No matter. They are here and breeding. That's what's important.)

The first insight is that children borne of this union, even before their citizenship petition (but after their residency petition), are immediately granted citizenship at the fort. What exactly that means for labor will have to wait another … ugh. 12 years. Hey ho.

Still: Lesson one:

Married long-term residents get pregnant if married, and give birth. They carry around their babies like everyone else, nothing silly going on there.

Lesson two:

Babies are given immediate citizenship, it seems.

Lesson three:

Lesson three will have to wait about 9 months, for when the babies become children. Provisional assumption: Kids will be kids, participate in play, etc. Time will tell!

Lesson three update:

Provisional assumption vindicated: Children appear to play and be merry as usual. Great success!

Lesson four:

Children of migrants appear to inherit the cultural values of their parents. Good to know!

Lesson five:

Children of migrants, upon growing up, become, near as I can tell, full-fledged members of the fort in every way, assignable to professions, positions, jobs and squads.

Lesson six:

Children of migrants will take up the gods of the fortress they are born into, at least if they don't inherit any from their parents. More research needed to determine the situation where they do inherit.

Dwarf need 12 years to become adult peasants.
How long for other non-dwarf to become adults peasants?

I suspect it depends on the creatures' raws:

Grasshopper man: 0
Oriole man: 1
Lion man: 3
Hippo man: 5
Elephant man: 10

=D

We can finally play as a nursery fort !

Nursery Fort :
Annoucement to all living beings of the world :
I'm sure you want to read great books, have wonderfull drinks, make parties all day along and get laid; but you don't want to bother with the children who come after the fun !

Here's the solution ! Procreate at [insert fortress name] !

Meet the legendary enthusiasm of dwarves, abundance of booze, necromancy books, opulent bedrooms for you and your soon-to-be-impregnated wife acolyte !
When after loads of fun, an inevitable baby comes, leave him to us, the dwarves of [insert fortress name] !!
Your beloved baby will receive all the benefits of the infamous dwarven childcare, and when grown up, will work for us as a slave be used as a meatshield fulfill his dream by working in [insert fortress name]'s many industries, while you can keep having a blast, producing more offsprings.

Now, stop reading this annoucement, and just come to us already !

PS : @Williham : When the baby has grown up, make him attack and kill his parents... Because !!Science!!

So dwarves allow naturalization by birth for babies of non-dwarven guests. Who knew?

Did you marry them by dfhack, or did they come pre-married, or were you able to persuade them to marry by long exposure?

They were married by DFHack. I've yet to be able to nab a breeding pair just through guests dropping by; what usually will happen, at best, is that one comes as a bard, and their spouse turns up as a traveling warrior or whatever, never petitioning for residency.

Since guests don't need food or drink to survive, could we get away with airlock-sealing the Tavern when such a spouse arrives so that they never leave? That way one would be assured a breeding pair.

Another possibility would be to wait for two young unmarried individuals of the same species to join the fort, isolating them in a room until they like each other to marry, and waiting for the babies. With grasshopper men, that would be instant free workers once a baby is born.

What is the pregnancy duration for non-dwarven creatures ? 9 months ? Or is there a raw value I'm not aware of ?

Near as I can tell, it's just 9 months for everyone.

Update on the breeding projects:

I had not explored this previously, but it appears children of immigrants to the fortress inherit cultural values from their parents, or their culture, not the fortress at large.

This makes sense.

This begs a question.

How many generations does it take for the values to be eroded by the fortress and exposure to everyday dwarven life?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

It generally only takes a few months of exposure to the bay12 forums for most people's values to erode down to our level. By that time they no longer bat an eye at dropping noblemen in magma, torturing children to make supersoldiers, or infecting their entire fort with lycanthropy.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.
