Sometimes I feel like we could use more spheres as I feel that gaps are left by our current ones, feel free to suggest more!

Blood: while I cant think of many mythological gods closely associated with blood, the games name speaks of a god of blood, it seems reasonable that occasionally a civilization might have a god of blood.

Existence:a civilization may have a god that is tasked with keeping reality in existence

Nothingness: perhaps could be used in personifications of whatever came before existence and perhaps could be spears applied to terrifying creatures from beyond reality. a !!fun!! attack that a nothingness forgotten beast might have is an attack which erases a target from history

Void: similar to nothingness but generally less in intensity

Time: probably closely related to agriculture and fate.

Prophecy: a god of knowledge of the future

The Unknown: an "Unknown" god might be something that a civ may pray to when they have no idea who else might listen.

Engineering: probably a favored sphere for the dwarves.

Destruction: like death but not specific to living things, empires crumble fortresses fall.

Matter: a civilization might have a god of material reality

Spirit: a civilization might have a god of non-material reality

Winter/Summer/Spring/Fall: seems strange that we do not have gods for specific seasons

Adversity: various mythologies have figures that generally act as antagonists to humanity.

Desert: like set from egyptian mythology

Cold: closely related to winter but more general

Intelligence: often associated with wisdom

I do wish there were more spheres as to fuel a story for the gods (Similar to how Set's conflict with Horus resembles the tug-of-war between the desert and fertile land), but I'm sure this is already being covered by the Myth update.

I initially thought my tavern was named "The Desert of Temples", which was kind of nifty. They I noticed that no, it was actually "The Dessert of Temples", which is a substantially different image.

-Void: How Asian, I agree with this in that it would be interesting for Toady to include other styles of deities.

-Engineering: I think we have stuff that could fit... especially since engineering is vague. Maybe disambiguate?

-Intelligence: There being a difference between wisdom and intelligence is a more modern thing. Classically they were one and the same.

The Aztecs didn't actually have any blood gods, that's a simplification of their worldview. Basically, they thought the universe depended on balance and exchange for nature to function properly, so they'd sacrifice things that were important to themselves and their society (Food, precious metals, beautiful children, strong warriors, etc.) in order to maintain natural objects and occurrences that were equally important. (Sunlight, rain, general prosperity, etc.) It was never about the blood, the blood was a side effect of needing to kill someone.

As for matter and spirit I dont think they are necessarily too modern, I was thinking something akin to some form of gnosticism.

And I wasnt so much thinking of aztecs when making the blood sphere suggestion, just that, its in the games name!

As for intelligence, Im pretty sure a difference was seen, at least to some extent, it seems reasonable that a culture could have a god of Logic or Reason

The ancients noted that something dies when it looses enough blood, so more than once a metaphysical connection was made between blood and the spirit/soul.  A Sphere of Blood would probably be of that origin.

And if the society learned enough about medicine to figure out blood's actual function (and hey, the brain is not just a cooling place for the blood!), the word would still retain its spiritually charged meaning in everyday language.

Also not all Aztec gods required any sacrifice and I think only one needed a human sacrifice.

while not all aztec gods required sacrifice, it was more than one for sure. Quetzalcoatl one of the most well known aztec gods, generally didnt require sacrafice however.

Additional Spheres:

Slavery: a god/force of slavery could drive its people to enslave others OR could be a being worshipped by slaves, something to show solidarity lift and perhaps avenge them if they are mistreated. mayby "servants" would be a better word.

Madness: I find it strange that we dont have one already, associated with chaos and disease probably but distinct.

Corruption: associated with slow moral decay or abuse of law

Perhaps forgotten beasts could have some special lovecraftian spheres that may sound a bit more modern

I personally think that spheres should just become editable via the raw files.
