I don't think pikachus response was relevant. You're right, they are on slabs, and from I remember you cannot just 'stumble' on them, I believe the first character who gets obsessed with his own mortality 'discovers' the slab.

They get obsessed with mortality and then they get to "ardent" worshipper of a death deity, and then the deity gives them the slab, I don't believe you can replicate this in adventure mode yet.

You can definitely do that.
I have stolen slabs from newbie necromancers hiding out in camps before.

Mabye, the introduction of a deity dialogue option "beg for eternal life".

Although it takes quite a guillible and foolish character to beg an invisible deity that gives no answer and think that will grant eternal life.
