0.42 Most Difficult World to Generate?
« on: January 31, 2016, 02:18:38 pm »

So, I started off trying to fill the world with titans and mega beasts, semi-megabeasts, ect. And then DF started rejecting worlds. Like, 40 of them. It tried one or two here and there, but it's still funny to see it continuously rejecct worlds like this :P

Just off the top of my head ridiculously huge numbers of beasts will usually lay waste to civilization, which may make worlds unusable if "playable civilization required" is enabled.  Though, I don't know what other factors might be at play.  You can enable logging for map rejections to see what specifically is causing them, and deal with the causes one by one.

If you want to gen a world like this, I suggest you look through the worldgen cookbook thread, and ask around.  Those guys know their way around the worldgen settings.

No expert at all, but it might be a "living space" issue.. Seems like each semi/megabeast requires its own cave or underground region to live in, so if you're genning a small world (with a standard amount of caves) that could be an issue..

I just genned a fresh world and embarked.. and there are two rope reed fiber buildings here :O They're complete except for doors and indoor floor tiles, but they have roofs.. I saw something in mantis about cloth walls genning (usually at the edges of maps) and causing problems, but these two buildings aren't trouble.. Thought it'd mention it, in case any mantis-people see it ;)

Those cloth/leather buildings are the remnants of some camp or another.  Bandit camps or outsiders (barbarians) usually.  I don't think refugees and armies make them, or at least they are only temporary.

As to world-gen... increasing savagery means limiting living space.  Humans and dwarves can't spread into savage locales, only elves and goblins can.  Thus, if you have both high savagery and high civilizations, only the largest worlds can hold both.  As you reduce the world size, you'll need to pair down on one or the other.  I'd choose savagery.  Savagery is fun if the elves bring you giant tigers, but they aren't really "dangerous" for you.  They don't allow more mega-beasts and night creatures to spawn (the opposite for night creatures, actually), and the wildlife... is rather benign.  Rarely will you get animals that make a beeline for the nearest dwarf to tear asunder... that only happens with undead/evil creatures.

How did you do that? I didn't know worlds could be rejected, once history had started.

I don't know about rejection, but I've had worldgen crash at site finalization after 1050 years of history.
