I don't remember last time I brought an anvil. This stuff is so expensive, I prefer to buy it later. Usually I don't have time for metal production before the first caravan comes anyway.

It's a good tip though about limonite--are they really that cheap at 12 points?  I thought the iron ores are around 25?

Which is why I usually just settle for malachite + cassiterite if it's available.  10 of each gives me 80 bronze bars, and around 10 for serrated disc first 2 caravan trading.  I don't usually rely on caravan after the first 2 trades--unless there is no iron/flux in my embark region.

Are there any tips if someone wants to pursue tavern / library / temple building game?

No, all iron ores cost 24 points and for the most part identical with the exception of one thing----limonite is lighter than the other two and easier to carry. The point of bringing iron ore is that on maps without iron, it will take the dwarven caravan 3 to 4 years to bringing 20 iron ore while you can bringing 20+ iron ore at embark easily. Remember, yeah bronze producing ores are cheaper and easier to carry, but at the end of the day they will stay at bronze. Iron ores will eventually turn into steel.

Yes, I don't need military that early. Or rather - the military would be to crappy to be of any value. The armour would be too heavy, the weapons too unwieldy etc. Before I train them, I get the anvil in exchange for some legendary meals.

Bringing a quantity of your own bituminous coal additionally helps in keeping fuel consumption down, one piece of charcoal can create much more coke (which if applied correctly can be poured back into fuel creation, and out of the hands of masonry strange moods) for making glass pots (in which a large quantity of sand + free bags can help with) which is pleasantly handy for storing booze (unless you find fire clay) and also melting down/smelting ores you bring with you.

-Embark on a Terrifying biome. Terrifying is good as it Terrifies your dwarves all the enemies attacking you!

-make sure it has an aquifer. Aquifers are good as it's a free infinite source of hydration!

-Since the biome is Terrifying(ly safe!) you can afford to give your dwarves farming, woodcutting and fruit picking skills to enjoy the nice weather!

-spend all of your points on yaks. Yaks are horrendously dangerous when undead the most useful and protective animals of all!

have fun!

My embark list is somewhat short, actually.

2 miners, a carpenter (not skill invested, carpentry levels fast), a mason/architect, a grower, a hunter and a smith.
Miners, carpenter and grower get busy immediately, mason smithy and hunter do the rest.  Hunter usually ends up doing a lot of bitchwork until migrants arrive, but he starts with combat skills the others lack.

2 copper picks to get digging immediately
1 anvil because anvil
1 training axe (cheaper, same choppin' power)

6 turkey hens, 4 gobblers
4 ewes, 2 rams, is 42 wool cloths each shearing season
2 male, 2 female dogs
2 male, 2 female cats
Butcher spare non-dog non-breeding males early for leather, meat and bones.  Turkeys are SO CHEAP, large, and lay tons of eggs.  Dogs get trained for hunting/war.  Leather for quivers first, then leather armor, leggings, backpacks, bags

One of each type of milk for variety and cheap barrels
equal number of single cheap meats for same (no rat meat plz)
7 each seed variety  (7 is an efficient plot size for potash use)

3 malachite
3 cassiterite (makes 24 bronze, more than enough for any early scuffles before steel production is underway)
1 or 2 limonite (lightest iron ore, will become 4 steel with..)
4 limestone for eventual steel

Every last point besides becomes COOOOAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Have a plan.  That is really the only tip!

I've got more minimal over my playthroughs.  These days it's two copper picks and a wooden training axe.  Plus a few cats and dogs if I'm feeling absolutely luxurious.  (No evil biomes for me  :P )  And really the training axe and second copper pick are luxuries...

A case of less is more (less stuff=more fun).  I do want a pick to get to the good stuff and not have to faff around for months though.

I don't remember last time I brought an anvil. This stuff is so expensive, I prefer to buy it later. Usually I don't have time for metal production before the first caravan comes anyway.

Yep.  By the time the first caravan arrives I tend to have dug out workshops for forges, stockpiled some metal bars (from native ores) and have a pile of fuel waiting to go.  The way I play I would only get the forge(s) going a month or two earlier anyway...

The real issue here is, what happens if that caravan doesn't bring you an anvil for some reason?  What if they're scared off by a goblin army and never make it, or they just don't bring one, or...?  Then you're delayed for a whole year, maybe more.

Those 100 points are cheap, for that kind of security.

It happened to me once. First caravan was scared off by an old skeleton decaying in grass, the second caravan was massacred by goblins. And the greenskins were careful to let that mule laden with anvils escape. This caused otherwise unremarkable embark to be a bit challenging, so it was worth it.

I like to get my managing going on early. Which means it is absolutely never going to be a miner doing it.
