Monotheistic Religion
« on: January 29, 2016, 10:47:39 am »

Hi ,good day, afternoon or night.

My suggestion is that differentiation is introduced between the monotheistic religions and polytheistic cults , allowing some civilizations in religious worship had one god, or more in contrary case.

Look for this suggestion in the search , but I see no accurate result. Excuse me if I'm wrong.

Sorry for the mistakes, i speak spanish.

Already sort-of in game: elves worship a regional Force, a god related to the region / biome they started their civilisation in.

I was referring to a more general concept , where despite the species, civilizations have different types of worship.

The cult of the elves , seem more animism.

Would love to see more variety in religion, would also be interesting to have the occasional atheist or antitheist

Given enough time, I could see, in the pantheon of some civilizations, a god receiving more and more worship, first as king of the gods and then as the unique one.

Already sort-of in game: elves worship a regional Force, a god related to the region / biome they started their civilisation in.

Isn't this pantheism?

Would love to see more variety in religion, would also be interesting to have the occasional atheist or antitheist

I could see some philosophers trying to deny the existence of deities before being striken by lightning:

Quote from: Small Gods
"We get that in here some nights, when someone's had a few. Cosmic speculation about whether gods really exist. Next thing, there's a bolt of lightning through the roof with a note wrapped round it saying 'Yes, we do' and a pair of sandals with smoke coming out. That sort of thing, it takes all the interest out of metaphysical speculation."

I remember posting ideas here, about ancestor worship, imperial cult and heros; we could envision pantheistic and nontheistic religions.

Would this make sense in a world with curses, moods, fantastic creatures, magic and so on? Do they think that gods are actually just really powerful wizards playing a trick on mortals or what?

I can see agnosticism showing up, 'cause like, a Dwarf Fortress world is already pretty terrible to live in without some magical sky-wizard cursing your entire village to murderize eachother for one guy knocking over a statue. Who would worship a god of mercy that threw around more curses than kindness?

Agnosticism especially doesn't make sense when the gods actually do stuff.

I couldn't think of a better word for "believes god(s) exist, but unsure if they should be worshiped".

Dystheism (the belief that the gods are not necessarily good) or misotheism (hating the gods) are potentially applicable.

Would also be nice to have global or cosmic forces being worshipped rather than just regional.

Eh, the abrahamic god is often described as the "god of Israel", especially in judaism. True, it's more anthropomorphized than the Forces that elves worship, but there's definitely historical precedent for "regional" monotheism.

Depending on how the Myth Arc is realized, it would be interesting to see if different elven civs could have religious wars based on their different Forces.

Yeah, if anyone was going to ruin the game with midichlorians then it would be the elves.

I honestly don't see it given their thing is "Harmony OR ELSE!"

It would require a force absolutely warped and wicked...

Elfs worship the force of the particular biome they live in. So followers of the jungle-force could condem the followers of the savanna-force as heathens.
