((No, you're all professional ditch diggers.

But yeah, Channeling is basically raw magic ability. The primary use for Channelers The Profession is to magnify spell effects beyond a caster's normal limits. Channeling The Skill allows the exact same thing but all on your own. In either case the advantage is quantity rather than quality; a Novice Necromancer with a gaggle of Channelers could produce a much larger flesh golem than the necromancer could alone (or at least do so faster), but probably couldn't achieve the sorts of complex, nuanced results you might expect from a Master Necromancer.

Mechanically, the magnitude of your actions (units created, people affected, etc) is usually equal to the relevant spell school plus the lower of that or your Channeling; since you've all raised it as high as your highest other school like good students, this means it doubles your output. Channeling from other sources is added onto that but suffers its own restrictions.

Traditionally, apprentice mages serve as Channelers, in order to train a vital skill, give them hands-on experience with a wide variety of magics, and provide veteran mages with free muscle for their own projects. Mages who skip this step and jump straight to their magic of choice tend to be more skilled but limited than those that go through the proper procedure.

All of which means that Channelers serve two major purposes. One, they let whoever's using them perform magic on a larger scale than without. Two, as you guessed they provide a pool of possible apprentices to mold into full-fledged casters. Note that magic is fairly personal, so trying to train them all as fire mages or healers will likely be less effective than letting one or two suddenly realize they want to be a Banjo Mage or Pollenmancer.))

With the help of a few non-lumberjack laborers, set-up eight tents in a circle; declare it to be the infirmary, and get medical supplies sorted out. (My own tent will be very closed to the infirmary).
Wait at the infirmary for the inevitable flood of casualties.

((The former's quick enough to be a minor action, though you could also sort very meticulously through the medical and potentially medical supplies over the course of a week.))

After Sjigs fear shakes managed to calm down he forced Nak to awaken and the two of them explored their new home. Sjig-Nak scampered around the hill, looking for an ideal nesting location. Hopefully someplace nearish to the pit, but not so close that it'd be the first place to come under attack. A flat area or non flooding depression in the ground on one of the slopes of the hill would be ideal!

"Ah yes certainly here is the best location possible for a great mage of my magnificent and impossible to eclipse statue that is of the greatest of the mages here! The start of my workshop or the seed of an empire of flesh and bone perhaps yes yes! Certainly nothing could possibly be better then this current choice other then not having so much gods be damned unending rain and also the fact that we are near no where with no buildings and no resources and no clients and no nothing and we are going to die of starvation or possibly overconsumpion of our flesh by horrid monsters! Yes...!"

Search for a nesting location (Presumably minor action?)

Once Sjig-Nak settled on a site they ran around, gathering up some carpenters and miners. Sjig explains his needs to them build cages, pits, and pens in the area he selected. He also has the carpenters set up some work areas with tables and desks and stuff for him to ply his trade on. Over and around the pits and work areas they should also erect wooden barriers to keep the water out to avoid floods and ruination of important materials. As they start on this project Sjig sets up his own tent nearby. I'm not sure if a project of this limited complexity needs an architect, if so (and if no one else is using him for something more important) snap that dude up! (Presumed 1 major action? as Sjig oversees the placement and set up of all the stuff, making sure the pits are deep enough and the walls are sturdy enough and such.)

Omuz tugs thoughtfully at his beard as he surveys the camp, tiny silver beardbells ringing as they shake around. Gnawing on a slice of purring maggot cheese, he muses that he really should get some alchohol. His liver reserve was starting to run out and he was getting dangerously close to being sober. Can't believe I forgot to pack any.

Minor Action: Set up a forge slash workshop space.
Minor Action: The Flesh golems are starting to get on my nerves, staring at me through the tentcloth when I try to sleep. Kick them into the pit.
Major Action: Large coppers poles covered in iron runes crackle with power as Omuz slowly places them around the pit, attempting to make a ward that'll keep some of the weaker monsters from leaving the pit. Attempt to get some soldiers assigned to guard me during the warding.
Major Action: Even Omuz struggles to move the hulking wooden blocks into the correct warding configuration, planning to shield the entire settlement from rain. It had been days since he was last properly dry. He feared some of his clothes might start to rot soon. Wooden blocks procured from lumberjacks. Try to get a single channeler to help me with the work.
Minor Action: Try to get some booze.

((The flesh golems were always just a minor plot device for not needing to carry my luggage myself. Time to get rid of them before they can make a mess.))

Presumably minor action: Malacent uses Sculpting to extract a small piece of the magic whirlpool that was surrounding Blacktongue and carries that bit with him so he can experiment on it.

The imp was rather satisfied with actually having been given a spot inside one of the landed ships. He didn't mind being a powerful someone's simpering whatever; it wasn't too different with what he had going with his mentor before the latter's death. Besides, it was clearly a testament to his skill and grandeur that he had managed to land himself into such a privileged position with so little effort on his side. Now he only had to make sure to continue his studies and become the greatest demon ever.

((Going to see what I can get before I do anything else.))

She shoots you an irritated glare. Which differs from her disdainful glare mainly in that her forehead twitches a little. "Haven't you? You are a 'Favored Soul,' are you not? Favored of the weakling gods?"

After Sjigs fear shakes managed to calm down he forced Nak to awaken and the two of them explored their new home. Sjig-Nak scampered around the hill, looking for an ideal nesting location. [8, Poor] You locate a good nesting spot- a shallow depression far enough down the hill that nobody's set up a tent there yet. Oh sure, the water pools there into an ankle-deep lake, but it's otherwise perfect!

As you plan your new workspace, a few rather serious complications occur to you:

The most pressing issue is your ability to lead effectively. Specifically, you don't have any. Leadership is the skill used for directing others in coherent tasks, and at the moment yours is at -1 Inexperienced. You won't be able to lead until you get some experience ruining things under a tutor of some kind (willing or otherwise).

You can simply ask individuals to individually perform tasks for you, but without your overarching leadership and direction the results are likely to be haphazard at best. For a series of pens and pits, this might or might not be a problem. Of course, without proper leadership ability even getting them to take your order or request isn't a guarantee.

Another (non)issue is your lack of an architect. Architecture is a planning skill, meaning literally a skill to make plans. You can operate without plans, but your results tend to be less uniform and not as well designed. If you want your pits to all be exactly the same or have some specific feature, you'll need some kind of planner to produce plans for your laborers to follow. If you just want pits how can they possibly make bad pits, no planners or planning is required, and you can just get them to make pits.

The final issue is order division. Normally, leadership actions can only affect one group of people towards one given task. You can't get some carpenters to build boats and others to build houses with a single action, for instance. Higher Leadership allows more components to the same projects, such as getting carpenters and glassworkers to make houses with glass windows.

So all in all, your dreams of directing the construction of your own personal workspace appear infeasible at the moment. Convincing people to fill it with holes and walls of their own accord is unreliable but doable, and wouldn't even require a full action unless you were making a habit of consistently recruiting and prodding them.

Miya's voice sounds confused but quite excited.
..wait what? I-i have holy magic!?
After she gets a responce to this
Try and find out where my holy magic originates from build a small shrine attempt to use the orb of happiness on the most depressed or angry people see if any of the other captains want help with something and try and set up a tent for herself.
[4, Malus] You try to figure out where your holy magic originates from, which mainly lead to you thinking about how no god could possibly find you useful enough to give you magic. The rain probably doesn't help your resulting funk, but at least you know who to use your orb on.

You're not sure what to build a small shrine out of. A proper building would take a major action, and you don't have any construction experience. An idol or symbol of some sort could also work, but you don't have any carving skill either. You suppose you could try scratching something into the side of a tree?

You see what the other captains are up to. Bollwheel is predictably lecturing the soldiers on the importance of valor. They do not look happy, and the minotaur taking a break to chat with you does nothing to improve or worsen that mood.

"Certainly! It's the men you see," he says, leaning in conspiratorially but still talking at what would be full volume for anyone else, "They're in a bit of a rut! Can't wait to get out and let those beasties have what for! Alas, it's our sworn duty to defend the colony, and with that damnable pit of savagery and evil lying about we just can't spare the manpower! Not yet, anyway.

So! If there's anything you could do to liven their moods, just as a stopgap until we can face the enemy in glorious battle! No doubt it'd help tide them over, you see."

You also check in with Gruelfist, who appears to be meeting with hunters.

"Ah yes, Miya was it? Favored Soul I understand, quite the rarity. You strike me as a people person, Miya, and I like that. Now what I could really use from you, if you can manage it, would be some morale-assisting increases to production. Lumberjacks, specifically. Need em to chop down the wood to build houses with. As I'm sure you've noticed, folks don't like being rained on constantly, and getting them houses will be a good way to give em a bit of respite. That's why our most pressing need is houses, but for those we need lumber, you see?

So even if it's just a handful, if you could improve the mood of some of our lumberjacks such that they'd give us a greater yield, that'd be a fantastic help to us all, Miya."

[14, Good] Finally, you attempt to set up your tent. It goes as well as could be expected, given that everything is wet at all times. Crawling inside gives you respite from being physically rained on, but everything still feels wet and there's nothing to dry yourself off with.

((The flesh golems were always just a minor plot device for not needing to carry my luggage myself. Time to get rid of them before they can make a mess.))
You slam your anvil and trunks into the mud next to a tree trunk, shielding them from the rain as best they're going to get shielded. Workshop space acquired.

Your rotting servants are handily disposed of by tossing them into the pit. The soldiers stationed nearby watch with curiosity, but nothing in particular happens; they fall in, vanish from sight in the rain, and don't come back up.

[7, Poor] You locate some watered down beer; it's better than nothing and there's a fair supply of it, but you could certainly do better.

Presumably minor action: Malacent uses Sculpting to extract a small piece of the magic whirlpool that was surrounding Blacktongue and carries that bit with him so he can experiment on it.

The imp was rather satisfied with actually having been given a spot inside one of the landed ships. Now he only had to make sure to continue his studies and become the greatest demon ever.

((Going to see what I can get before I do anything else.))
[18, Bonus] You manage to scoop away a little ball of the overloaded windrain ward, though without anyplace to store or maintain it it'll probably dissipate soon.

Malacent spent some time trying to figure out what to do while Ano played the banjo by his side. In one hand, he wanted to experiment, while on the other he was positively sure violence awaited him down the line if anything went wrong inside Blacktongue's houseship. So in the end he decided to go with the option that allowed him to continue ingratiated to the gorgon for the longest possible period of time. "I'm a GENIUS!"

Major: Go to the camp's outskirts to experiment on the piece of overloaded windrain ward. First, see if I can keep it going by channeling magic into it. If that worked, then use Sculpting to try and separate the wind and water apart. Discern whether it's just rainwater being spun around or if it is part of the spell now.
Major: In case the ward hasn't exploded, try to revert it to the former protective shell configuration; in case it has and the other guys' rain ward is set up, help them expand with Sculpting and Channeling; in case there's no ward set up, try to train Sculpting by creating shapes out of pure energy from Channeling.

Emergency plan in case of pverall bad luck: help with any useful magical or medical efforts by allies.

((Not much I can do without a source of magic to work with. Should probably fix that soon.))
