I think the skills should depend on the setting.  Gun skills wouldn't make sense in a medieval fantasy game, for example.  What sort of setting did you have in mind?

Well, the setting I had in mind was in an alternate universe similar to our own, with players having just stepped out of a portal.
This would be so I wouldn't have to explain every single aspect of the world at one time and everyone could just figure out how the world works on their own.
Would that work?
