Can seeds be stored in barrels?

Or are bags the only way?

I've already got a good cloth industry (gather ALL THE PLANTS + Farmable area + Plant Processing on repeat = WIN) up and running, but I was just curious.

Bags can go in barrels.

Its just a bad idea to do this.  When a dwarf picks up a seed from the dining room/still/mill/whatever, it'll mark the whole barrel full of seeds as busy.  This causes cancelation spam messages that tie up your seeds behind bullcrap and slow your farms down.

In particular, this is why you shouldn't set up cloth/thread stockpiles in your textile production.  As soon as a thread is produced, a dwarf will run and flag an entire bin full of threads.  Instead, I just put all my textile workshops in a row with a cloth-plant stockpile in front of the farmers workshop.  Each workshop will then pull from the one behind it (with a mill and dimple cup stockpile to the side of the dyers shop, which is itself wedged between the loom and clothiers).  Even when/if that bug gets fixed, you'll want to keep the cofiguration to cut down on stockpile tiles (kill FPS/take up space) and simple efficiency (can build them touching).

Things were changed in 0.42.X, so now seeds can be stored directly in barrels.

Phew!
Good.

I assume they can be put in pots, too, right?

Looks like it. I've got at least one pot in my seed storage stockpile. The only thing you explicitly need barrels for are the workshops requiring barrels.

I still carefully set my seed storage for no barrels.  Maybe it works now, but I still don't trust barrels for seeds.  Plus when I look at the seed storage I see one bag per seed.

I have never had this problem. I use bags and barrels, and I do not get massive cancellation spam.

I have had a problem where when I have been farming for a little while without a stockpile, and when they first start to gather everything all the seeds are being picked up and stored while other dwarves are trying to plant them.

But after that, I've never had cancellation problems.

I don't have much of a cancellation spam problem either, though I'm not sure if that's related to bug fixes, my habit of rotating crops between seasons, my fairly small farm areas, or a combination of the above...

It is (for me) a combination of the distances the dorfs need to travel, the size of the field and the number of planters. Some cancellation spam (for me) seems to come from planters locking the barrel...

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.

I do always, always have my seed storage right next to my farms. Within a few tiles. Maybe distance is the differing factor between us?

It depends on how many spare seeds you have and if they are all in the same barrel. Early on its a larger problem than when you have 200 seeds across a dozen barrels.

I always make sure to 'prune' (hehe) my seed storages every year or so. Sell those useless apple-seeds, and also get rid of the gajillion of plump helmet spawn too.
If you don't want to sell them, you can always dump them under an atom-smasher.
