siege disappeared
« on: January 04, 2016, 09:43:02 am »

So this thing hit me another time and i decided to put it right here.
got an embark, after a few seasons the first undead siege appeared. it said: the dead walks, hide while you can, blabla... so I set all dwarwes to a burrow, but then i checked unit list - no undead on the map!
few years later i had a human siege announcement and i saw a human warrior near the map border, but when i pressed "enter" to hide the announcement - the warrior disappeared, as well as siege sign.
so this smells quite buggy, any thoughts on this?
i'm using PeridexisErrant's cutting edge pack for 42.03 with dfhack alpha 1 from dffd.

The general consensus is that there was an army going somewhere else that happened to pass by your fort and as soon as its edge members strayed onto your embark, they booked it out of there.

It's essentially a false alarm - they're not really there to siege you, they're just passing through.

same happened to me. 3 times on different worlds.

also, once to my fortress came 2 different necromancers, dropped their routine of zombies and gobos near my front door and then moved along. the zombies and gobos were camping there for 2 whole years and then got bored.

weirdest thing was when i was reclaiming my fortress, annuancements about ambushes appered, but they zoomed in on places beyond my line of vision (probably somewhere deep in caves). most of the intruders that i found were poets and scholars which was really weird. also one hostile dwarf suddenly appered in my channel and lived there for 5 years without moving or eating anything.

There seems to be no logic to army movements.

This is almost certainly not the case. After receiving many such sieges where enemies started a siege and immediately fled, I retired the fort and examined legends to read what was going on. The civilizations sending armies only sent them to my fort, and to no one and nowhere else. The armies that attacked my fort did not then go somewhere else. They were not attacked by other civilizations, either. The only target of those armies was, in fact, my fort, not another target.

Does anyone know if this bug is reported yet on Mantis? I've searched but can't find it.

Good move to check the legends.
However, these hello/good by sieges often happen before meeting any of the goblin invasion triggers, so there's something else going on as well.

In a few cases I've had one or two stragglers left on the embark, and since they didn't go away, nor path to my fortress, my militiadwarf was sent to deal with them. While doing that, one or two additional enemies jumped in from off the edge.

I've also seen a siege appear, disappear, and then reappear, before disappearing again, a couple of times (without the siege indication going away in between).

In my latest fort, I've definitely had one siege of mostly humans that milled about a bit, wandered near my fort, and promptly fled, and then two significantly larger sieges of goblins and mounts with the occasional human that acted like a more traditional DF siege by killing everything that they could before being taken down by my troops.

I like the "just passing through" interpretation, though I don't know if it's true.

The disappearing sieges I've experienced occur when I fulfilled the requirements for the civilizations that attacked me (sometimes much later). I've noticed that disappearing sieges appear to consume your slot for a civ of that race, so that if you have disappearing goblins or humans, then that race cannot properly siege you at all. I also noticed that the disappearing sieges forced the "War" status between our civs, at least.

I've also noticed hello/goodbye sieges (I like this term) and I just assumed the goblins reconsidered their number vis à vis mine.  These tended, after all, to be very small (as far as I could see before they left again)  - however in my case where always in the appropriate siegin' season and the next years they'd form 'proper sieges' (in as far as charging en masse is a proper siege) with larger numbers, with troll and beak dog support.

I always assumed the hello/goodbye siege were the same goblin civ as the real fights - I should have checked their hats.

Weaker force size is another reasonable cause. The disappearing sieges I've seen were much weaker than the normal sieges that attacked the same fort, consisting of 8-16 units. I've seen normal sieges become susceptible to fear and panic as they were being slaughtered, so perhaps the weaker sieges are just panicking at the prospect of attacking the fort.

I don't think you can determine the size of a hello/goodby siege in any reliable way (unless legends can tell). When a siege is announced you only see the first line of the attackers on the map, if even that, and they then continue to arrive over a fairly long time. If they then leave immediately they following lines may very well never enter the embark at all.

thats true but I got the impression the hello/bye ones did have fewer foes even in the initial arrival

Legends tells you the size of every siege, including these glitchy sieges.

I've taken a legends look at the hello/good by sieges in my world, and they are a bit odd, since they're send by a "dead" civ (as marked by legends viewer). The first siege, appearing at the one year mark, was legitimately sent by that civ, but the site that siege and all the others was sent from was conquered/taken over by another goblin civ in the third year, while the sieges continued to appear for another 5 years (the site is still occupied by 32 goblins and 3 humans).
The first siege definitely happened before I met any siege conditions, and later ones were made from the same site, but now under the rule of a different goblin civ.
It seems you can only have trade/war relations with one civ of each race (with black towers being an exception), so maybe the site sends out a siege, but then does a last minute check and determines the goblin "diplomacy" slot is already taken? Since the sieges are sent as part of the same war as before that might satisfy the conditions to send the sieges, but not for them to actually be performed?
I also noted the elven civ I'm getting caravans from has "died" as well, so maybe the world activation has missed to make relations dynamic as well?
