Goblin in human village attacking me
« on: January 03, 2016, 09:14:47 am »

So I was in a village searching for companions and found this goblin warrior inside a small hut, I ask him to join me, on which he agreed, but then when I turned my back and tried to walk away he stabbed me down with his scimitar...

has anyone else experienced something similar?

I've seen goblins get into fights with every other race in towns, so I don't think its an isolated issue. Seems to be common with races whose civs start in Dark Forts - I have a vrykul civilization that starts in Dark Forts as well and they suffer from the same "hostile to everyone" behavior despite not having baby snatcher or thief tags that should make a civ automatically hostile to ones without said tags.

What about the village itself, by the way? Is it occupied by goblins or is that just one goblin? If it's occupied I think that would explain it.

I've had Goblins beg for mercy after I slaughter their whole band, and then immediately try to attack me the moment I turn my back. You can't trusts the jerks with anything it seems.

I'm guessing it's a values issue then.

Goblins just go hostile way too frequently. Too often a goblin who's been resident in a place for years will suddenly aggro just because they loaded in the same tile as me. I see a lot of bards and a few dancers cut down, so I never get a chance to learn their forms.

by the way: Is adventure mode broken right now? When I go to a andit camp they dont attack me but are friendly even when I kill their companions before their eyes, the same thing happens if I slay villagers, no one reacts  ???

DF is always broken in some way;] But bandit groups in this and previous versions haven't been automatically hostile to the player's civ, though they may be to some site groups. If you fight with bandit muggers in a village or in wandering encounters, the rest of the group still may not be hostile unless you attack first, for example chasing them down while they're fleeing to finish them off. If you pick a fight with the leader, few lieutenants show the loyalty to intervene; most bandits will leave you to a one-on-one duel, and most won't seek vengeance if you kill.

I was telling a story in a tavern, and one of my companions remarked at how they were enjoying my performance. the Goblin Tavern Keeper was apparently so offended by his enjoyment, that he crassly remarked at him, and then one-shot him with a carving knife  :(

Maybe it's caused by Goblin's lack of the [BENIGN] token, though if ZM5's Vrykul civilization has [BENIGN] but still attacks randomly, then I don't know.  :(

Nah, they have [LIKES_FIGHTING] but I don't think that's what causes them to be immediately hostile to everyone in world_gen due to being a creature token and not an entity token.
I do have an orcs though which lack both [LIKES_FIGHTING] and [BENIGN] tokens, yet they don't start fights randomly. I'm guessing it has something to do with Dark Fortress civs, I'll edit the vrykul raws temporarily and set their starting location as regular towns, then I'll check if they're still automatically hostile.

I've been told that [LIKES_FIGHTING] doesn't actually do anything anymore. To replace the function of it you want to change one of their personality traits. O don't remember which, but it should be obvious.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

There's Anger Propensity. I wonder if Low Tolerance may be a contributing factor; they may be quicker to get angry toward people from different backgrounds, with different values.

I wondered often when walking through forest retreats how many elven warriors were getting pissed off to see the wood decorations on my clothes.

Mm, that could be the case...I'll have to mess with that more later. The vrykul have anger propensity, violence, and cruelty set to high values (higher than even goblins) with very low tolerance.

The bit with the tolerance though...aren't goblins really tolerant? Wouldn't that mean they wouldn't start fights as much because they accept the human culture or w/e they reside? Or do their higher cruelty and anger propensity values override that?

Goblin civilizations also have [LOCAL_BANDITRY] which is what makes their sites hostile (and makes them send out ambush parties). Perhaps this hostility is carrying over outside the site.

I'm not too sure about the anger propensity, it's only 10 more than average, it really shouldn't be too noticeable a difference from other civilizations random attacks.
Are other civilizations randomly attacking? If so, it could just be the anger propensity making goblins attack more. Otherwise I doubt it's the anger propensity.
