Change to dumping?
« on: January 02, 2016, 02:09:04 pm »

I haven't played in awhile, but last time I was managing a fortress you could mass dump items to move them around. However, in the fortress I'm playing now items seem to be dumped one at a time and only have another item piled on after the last item is unforbidden and removed... My dump site is just a spot on the ground, not next to a pit where dorfs would throw things off the edge...

Is this a bug or is it an intended change that I missed?

I have noticed dumping takes longer, but I don't think it was quite that slow for me (slower yes, but it appears to have...eventually happened, but faster too)

Could be you're looking at priorities messing with your dump, limited dumpers with available time to make the dump so it may just be allocating one dumper at a time.  Dunno, might be something someone can test.

I've had no problem stripping prisoners and dumping their stuff in one big single tile pile in 0.42.03.

For me it never happened, despite leaving a few items with dumping designations for several seasons in game, they didn't get moved at all until the previous item was taken away, despite several dorfs having no jobs at the time... I plan to make a new dump over a cliff to see if that makes a difference, wish me luck!

Well, I'm playing 42.04 (just downloaded it yesterday) so it might be a change between those versions...

Small update, the only items I can reliably get dumped are items that are indoors... They just ignore dumping designation if the tile the item is sitting on is outdoors... Whether the dump zone is indoors or outdoors doesn't seem to make a difference, and whether the item will be dumped on a tile or off a cliff doesn't appear to either...

Dumping fall into the "haul refuse" job.
So you need to check that your orders are set to collect outside refuse, and that dwarves have the "haul refuse" job activated. It also is a low priority job and it may be done faster (or at all) if dwarves step near the tile. (That last point I'm sure for cleaning, have seen some dwarves ignore a pool of blood for years until they need to pass by it to join the tavern, it was then cleaned immediately. But that's a CLEANING job, not refuse hauling.)

What he said - I believe 'o' - 'r' - 'o' sets outside refuse to be collected, including items marked for dumping.

I've never had items dump into a single tile, instead always dropping them off a short cliff. it would suck to learn about that feature after it's broken . .

Also, if you have a 1x1 hole where things are dumped into, make sure to designate a 3x3 dumping zone over it, so there can be multiple dumping jobs at the same time. I think a 1x1 zone over the hole won't work at all even (because dwarves have no place to stand on, so I doubt a job will be generated then). Not sure though, never made a 1x1 dumping zone.

Ah, that explains it, the place I was dumping from was my magma glass furnace over a volcano, so it's technically outside...

To dump into a hole, you want the zone adjacent to the hole.

I use 1x1 dumping zones all the time, and it'll definitely generate more than one Dump job.  But I haven't done science to see if a multiple-tile zone generates more jobs.  (I doubt it would, but can't be sure without testing.)
