Just so I'm clear,  you're describing primitive torpedos that can also be used as rocket boosters?

+1 to the Gammell Class Raider.

We should have gone for the 12 pounder when we had the chance. Atterton's artillery superiority is becoming a large problem.

The forward array is torpedoes that can be used for jet propulsion just propulsion, no need for separate suggestions for some weapon system... The rear array is just jet propulsion, and takes the place of rowing. One of the revisions will probably be rowing because the jet propulsion will probably be unreliable for some reason.

But yes, totally torpedoes...

So it's built for ramming, but has some small guns so it isn't completely defenseless?

My main concern about it is how gigantic the air tanks will have to be to get a noticeable speed boost out of them for a twodecker ship. At the end of the day air just isn't that great of a propellant. It works for torpedoes because they're mostly hollow, fairly small, and don't need to go all that far, but especially at our tech level they're probably at about the upper limit of what we can usefully produce.

Yes, it would only be for short distances.

I would like to get some sort of technique for pressing the outer hull in a single piece, or maybe two pieces and then pressing/riveting them together, but I am not sure that we are ready for all-metal hulls...

Ooooh, I think that I forgot to mention that it is meant to have 6 'crew' and 12 'soldiers' with a lot of mixing of duties. It is mostly designed to travel in packs and utilise boarding manoeuvres. Ramming is one of the things that I would be tempted to forgo, it is a lot of weight and damages the victim while tending to get you stuck to them. Great for building a secure platform to board from, but not so good for sailing your prize away. The cannons are largely suppression with carcass or canister shot and for attacking in packs while the torpedoes would be primarily to thin out the numbers of a force with superior tonnage. They are only about 35 feet long so not big. I would be tempted to try to get them smaller but that would eat into their length to width ratio...

Really, there is a lot wrong with the idea, but It is the ship that we can get now, with a lot of innovations that are best for short-range vessels and not so useful for stealing for a major warship... I would rather desing some grand flagship that can rend the seas, but that would be inappropriate without a shiny new cannon to equip it with...

If someone wishes to add an updated Grommell class than that would be just grand!

P.S.
Adding metal hull and crew compliment to Grommell Proposal.

And I forgot to mention that it has a normal rudder...

P.P.S.
I would never expect a Grommell to serve effectively in two engagements without resupplying at the least. They could someday be supplied by some sort of supply barge and maybe even carried or towed or something for longer missions, but not really intended for anything other than skirmishes. Ideally they capture prizes that can battle in the open.

Oh, and I say that it has two decks, but there is basically nothing underneath the lower deck, it is just a platform to stand on and stabilise the structure a little.

P.P.P.S.
Maybe it needs some sort of wedge to spread out the air jets and get more 'grip'. Or perhaps water jets... Ehh, I have already done too much...

RAM's ship is just too fancy, but I like idea of pneumatic mortars...

Victoria class
Meant to be mass produced (target cost 3 ore or 3 ore, 1 wood max 4 ore 1 wood), this small vessel looks very modest being  armed with only two nose pointed 8 pounders (each can also shoot either left or right) Yet it has fast sails that give the ship amazing mobility. The vessel is small enough to operate in large rivers and lakes making them useful for supporting army in land battles. Its main disadvantage that it is not suited for long voyages because of relatively fragile hull that can't withstand a large storm.

In addition to conventional cannons vessels use four innovative pneumatic short range mortars that can be loaded with grappling hooks, chains to break masts\tear sails or containers with greek fire equivalent.

Depending on the situation\opponent the vessel is meant to either disengage to get cover from shore fortification or maneuver around the enemy at the edge of its cannon's range or rapidly close the gap and let mortars and marine infantry do the work. Another use is a short range troop transport

This looks pretty good, +1. Let's make use of our marines.

I will stand by the Gammell. It is too fancy, but that is what revisions are for. The Victoriaa is merely mortal, it will never be sufficient...

What about shore artillery maybe? We need to throw the loyalists back into the sea, one way or another...

A revision could get us a big Van Karsten gun that could fill the role though, and we really need our own blue water navy.

Do we? Gunboats could be a cheaper way to deny them landing, which is the real priority.
