Early appearance of undercover migrant? (Spoilerish)
« on: December 28, 2015, 08:02:51 am »

I'm running a fortress to try to get a handle on the new visitor/tavern/... mechanics rather than to play "properly", and I suddenly see a corpse being hauled. There shouldn't be one, since it was a fair while since something attacked. My head mechanic is dead. Strange, as he just performed his side duty as the trader. Nothing in combat logs.
Save scum. I find him sleeping peacefully. Slightly later he's pale. Must be a visitor then...
Save scum. Send the militia to his room. One of the migrants from the latest wave (bringing the fortress pop total from 58 to 68) comes in, stands over the mechanic, and is identified as dwarf butcher vampire, but apparently he's distracted by the militia and leaves (and I was unable to order the militia to attack him).

I was under the impression that vampires wouldn't arrive before the pop reached 80, but that apparently isn't correct (any more). I might just reach 80 if I include the dozen or so visitors as well as the migration wave he arrived with. I've lowered the titan/megabeast threshold to 20, though, so that could be it?

It's just that by 80 migrants it's quite likely that a vampire has shown up at some point, you could probably get a vampire in your first migrant wave, or at least the third since those always take from actual populations rather than being generated as the first two are at least sometimes.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

Not sure what was changed in the wiki (I guess 80 pop floor removed), but there are several things which are obsolete:
- My vampire had "no job" rather than being on break, as a result of the new needs system.
- DT doesn't show the kill list of the vampire any more, nor did it show the true name of it.

I definatly got a Vampire in my fortress before I had 80 dwarves around.
Unknowlingly I made her my manager/bookkeeper as she was quite fitting for the jobs.

After two dead dwarves (and one who survived) I decided to go search for who did it and put her in a closed off room (behind a nice gem glass window).

Looks like I got another vampire now...not sure yet who it is, I had first suspected it to be a visitor, but some (cheaty) legends checking makes that improbable.
Luckily, no-one died yet, both times I noticed it they had only been faint/pale.

EDIT:
I did check via looking at the deities available for temples and then checking who worships them - and then whether they cursed someone before. Which is why that visitor is probably still a vampire. Maybe he got cursed after I started my fortress (so that I can't see it in my legends-save)...hm...

EDIT2:
Oh gawd damn it, I should've just checked the "Others" list ... it clearly says "Human Poet vampire" ... who let that parasite in my fortress?...URIST???
Hm...how can I throw out such annoyances?

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I had a little vampire problem as well, and the new needs system made it fairly straightforward to check who it was.  They had no happy thoughts from inebriation or sleeping in a bed, and were horrified to see the death of their victim.

80 population was never a trigger, and was never intended to be read as any sort of magic number.  The wording was simply a casual remark.  I changed it to be more vague, to represent the casualness of the sentence.

I've also made a few more changes, reflecting your notes here.  Unfortunately, we don't know what vampires in 0.42 do to replace their "On Break" disguise.  More research will be needed.

Thanks greycat!

As I said, I observed "no job" while the vampire went to his victim, but I agree you should base wiki info on a better basis than a random forum poster saying things (at least two independent witnesses is probably a good rule of thumb).

I've played sub 80 pop fortresses for most of the last year and have never seen a vampire nor a were beast during that time, but it appears their absence was probably due to me playing pocket worlds somehow (with curses enabled, to no avail). It also explains why I've failed to find a setting to lower the pop trigger for their appearance...

@ToadChild:
When it comes to lack of booze and absence of good feelings from food, booze, and sleep, they existed in 0.40.24 as well. Interestingly, though, the vampire admired the victim to be's bed...
Seeing the death of the victim is actually a disguise, as that's what everyone seeing the corpse report.

Interesting note about the corpse report. In one case, another dwarf was the one to make the actual report to the guards that the corpse was found.

I followed a vampire to his snacks/victims, and also saw "no job" listed.

That's been around since their introduction in 34.11--it's a side effect of not needing to eat, drink or sleep. ;)

1. Vampires can admire their "own" bed, but get no thoughts from sleeping in "a * bedroom".

2. Vampires are now more noticeable: the "inebriation" thought is much more noticeable.

3. However, it is no longer possible to find them using the buggy "On Break" discoloured job.
