Weed made me more focused... weird.
Weed makes me so focused that I become too focused to do anything without a great deal of effort.
Like I'll be trying to type and memories will be flashing through my head of various moments where I used a keyboard in the distant past.
Incredibly distracting...there's plenty of reason that I don't smoke it very often. >.>


Anyway, I imagine you could probably mod in a substance with a vague resemblance to weed... could probably make it cause a little bit of dizziness/whatever like alcohol, but replace alcohol's personality-changes with more suitable ones, like... boosting creativity and such, I guess.
That's not so; weed isn't everyone's choice. Dwarves would still go for the booze, elves would probably prefer herbs, goblins would probably snort crystal and huff gasoline, and humans would do a bit of everything.

Also, some rituals cause natural neurochemical effects by increasing or decreasing blood flow to the brain, so a substance isn't always required to get high.
This sounds pretty much right. Also, petrol-huffing goblins was an amusing mental image, thanks. :))

One man's gnomeblight is another man's ecstasy. Most mind altering substances are poisons.

This is objectively untrue, only some gases and ethonal actually act as poisons. All other drugs including heroin and psychedelic and not toxic. But to avoid a derail -

I love the idea of a 420 fortress. I bet creatures could be modded in with the same relationship to cannabis that the dwarves currently have to alchohol.

It is not the toxicity, but rather the effect of a stopping heart and highly suppressed brain stem that kills you - the method of action is neurotransmitters, rather then say beer, whose method of action is actually poisoning.

I like the idea of a magma pit which can be fed cart fulls of hemp that billow smoke into the dining room, but that is more fort mode.

I wouldn't be surprised if this kind of thing was planned already, unless i'm unaware of a statement that was made at some point that it isn't happening (which doesn't seem to be the case.)

Otherwise i doubt it'd be that difficult to mod in anyway.

Real talk, I bet Toady smokes a joint ever now and again. I mean really, he's a mathematician for christ's sake.

I doubt it will ever be simulated in Dwarf Fortress though, despite alcoholism being simulated in a scarily realistic fashion. Including domestic violence and black out rages. Like seriously...

Well, when you put it like that... I'd much rather have simulated sewer systems than simulated cannabis usage. :P

Being able to burn plants and ingest their effects would be a useful feature for many other things, though. Chemical warfare and smoking out hiding people, basically, as well as medical dope/morphine as K33n mentioned.

Despite all the discussion here, I'm seeing a lack of one historically important point. Is it worth adding syndrome effects to regular hemp, which generally has a lower THC content than varieties grown for its use as a drug? It my be worthwhile to add any such modded-in effects by adding a different cultivar that has the relevant syndrome.

Personally I'd rather stick with the derpy fictional drug effects I added to muck root, whip vine, and sliver barb in Adventurecraft. o3o

I think Toady would resist the idea of adding marijuana for the same reason he's ruled out bodily waste and waste managerment; because it could too easily become the memetic representation of DF among people with a shallow understanding of it. "Dwarf Fortress is a world of shit!" "Dwarf Fortress is a world of weed!"

But fictional herbs may be easier to integrate. Alchemy is in the plans, and herbs of all varieties will be needed. The same herbs used for medicinal purposes could also be used for recreational purpose.

In other words, barbed haze FTW. But yeah, fictional drugs would be easier to tolerate, plus make it more acceptable to exaggerate effects to whatever extent makes it useful in gameplay.

But still, I stand by my reasoning for why the idea would not be a highly realistic addition, which would be the only valid argument I'd see for adding such a thing. XP

Is it possible to add a syndrome to the burned smoke of an object? Also, since the game is known for gore and booze I don't see any rationale that other stuff wouldn't be in, although I am more in favor of fictional / magical things such as kobold bulb and golden salve, or some messed up stuff for Gobbos
