Why did my companion turn on me?
« on: December 23, 2015, 02:30:22 pm »

On my way to the hamlet of Cradledfierce, I had an uneasy feeling and dropped out of travel mode to find myself very close to four goblins. They were friendly to me and my two human companions. We chatted a little, and I learned that they were members of a group called the Flecked Jackals, under the leadership of Nguslu Hellphrase. Cradledfierce was close by, and we all walked the remaining distance together. The goblins seemed to be following me closely, and stayed nearby as I went to the well and talked to some townsfolk. I asked a couple of people their troubles, and they all replied that Nguslu Hellphrase's bandits were harassing the hamlet.

One might suppose that the goblins with me, self-proclaimed followers of Nguslu Hellphrase, might be the bandits in question. However, they didn't seem to be harassing any one. They didn't attack anybody, and nobody attacked them. No one on either side seemed to be provoking concern.

By asking around, I learned the whereabouts of Nguslu Hellphrase and headed that direction, losing my goblin entourage somewhere along the way. When I arrived at the goblin camp, I hailed the first goblin I saw. He was friendly, but uninteresting, so I dropped the conversation with him and proceeded to the center of the camp. When my two companions reached that first goblin, they killed him immediately. Then they chased down and killed a few others. I didn't try to kill any one, and for a long time no one bothered me while I picked through the bandit stash. Then a goblin wrestler came along and punched me. I hit him with my mace a few times until he was dead. His name was Stosub Doomjudge.

By this time, both my companions were out of sight. I became concerned when the announcements told me that Fensast, my spearman companion, was unable to break the grip of a goblin wrestler he was fighting. I went to see if I could help. Hiking up a small rise, I found that Fensast was in no trouble at all. He was still in the goblin's grip, but he had stabbed the goblin to the edge of death. I hit the goblin in the head with my mace and finished him off. His name was Song Poolmenace.

Nothing happened for a while, but I find these messages among the announcements:

Fensast Setocobler, Spearman: Stosbub Doomjudge is dead. I must let grief pass me by.
Fensast Setocobler, Spearman: I have a part in this. This might require an answer.

Then Fensast attacked me. I ran away and pleaded with him to stop fighting. He said he would fight no more, but attacked me again anyway. Again, I ran away and pleaded with him to stop fighting. Again, he said he would stop. This time, he shouted the following at me:

Fensast Setocobler, Spearman: Murderer! You took the life of Song Poolmenace. You are also a killer. You ended the days of Song Poolmenace.

Yet another goblin ran up and attacked me. I killed him, then went to find Fensast again, to see if we could reconcile. Unfortunately, I ran into him while walking uphill and accidentally fractured his skull. Now he is laying unconscious on the ground.

I have so many questions...
- Why were my two companions friendly to the Flecked Jackals at Cradledfierce, but chose to kill them on sight at their camp?
- Why did Fensast grieve the death of Stosbub Doomjudge?
- Why did Fensast attack me?
- Why does Fensast regard me as a murderer for delivering the death blow to Song Poolmenace after Fensast himself had mortally wounded him?
- Is there any way to restore Fensast back to health and reconcile with him?
- Fensast considers me a murderer for killing Song Poolmenace. Will other good people shun me for that death as well?
- What will happen if Fensast dies? Will I be an outcast for murdering him?

bandits appear as "friendly" but in reality when they follow you around they are trying to mug you. its kind of wonky from my experience. if you save and reload while they are mugging you they will immediately attack. companions usually attack bandits after a while.

as for why your companion attacked you for killing stosbub, it can only mean they had a relationship of some kind of knew one another. perhaps they together while one became a bandit? who knows. cant really tell. usually townspeople dont care if you kill bandits.

are you sure fensast also called you a murderer and not a killer when you killed song poolemance? "killer" is not a bad thing in df, murderer is. killing a dragon will make people tell you "youre a killer! you killed a dragon! youre also a pleasure to speak with!"

you could try asking your companion about those people, you know. see what he will say

Well, that was fun.

While I was tending to Fensast, my other companion, Siti, got her hand cut off by a goblin swordmaster. I went to kill the swordmaster, but he ran away. I couldn't chase him because several goblins had found the unconscious Fensast and were trying to kill him. I went and fended them off, killing about 9 in the process. Then Siti started attacking Fensast, presumably just because Fensast is hostile to me. Fortunately, Siti can't do much damage because she no longer has a weapon. After a while, she passed out from exhaustion.

Siti, by the way, thinks I'm "unhinged":

Siti Erabada, Axeman: You are my traveling companion. You are a killer. You ended the days of Stosbub Doomjudge. You are also unhinged. You perpetrated a violent attack upon Song Poolmenace.

In time, Fensast woke up and attacked Siti. He wounded her badly, but I eventually convinced him to stop attacking and join me as a companion again. That lasted a few seconds. Then Fensast attacked Siti again and wounded her further. I convinced him to stop and join as a companion one more time. Then I immediately went to sleep for eight hours. That seemed to cure all ills. Now Fensast, Siti, and I are a happy family again. Fensast seems to be fully healed after just one night's sleep. I think Siti will have permanent damage -- not just the loss of her hand, but also from the wounds inflicted by Fensast. Oh, well. On to the next adventure.

Companions are rabid dogs in my experience.

I had an elf dance partner/spearman running around with me, I was killing goblin criminals in a keep and every time I took out a goblin she would flip out and murder one of the nobles there.

No clue why, no possible relationships there, I dragged her across an ocean from an isolated island civ.

And that's why noone should have companions, kids. And that's all for our family-friendly episode of "dwarf fortress for kids"

hmm I don't get this with my companions... but then again I'm far to pacifistic to trigger one of them to snap on seeing a dead body for the first time in their lives.
then again, again, my companions seem to have a habit of falling out of reality and coming back with a twin so I'm an exception.

I don't know how the power of poetry works here, but when their morale is low due to killing a sentient or seeing one killed, there's a form that teaches morals about discipline. And another one that's just an open riddle about death. I guess they can all be didactic if applied right. I have another one that expresses pleasure in someone's death, but I'll save that until they're sufficiently hardened.

on top of all that you get called unhinged for attacking and killing a sentient so that might be canceling out the pacifistic option since being unhinged is similar to being a dangerous animal.
glad toady gave us ways to see into the minds of the NPC and our player character by talking.

That's why I go unarmed first, and let him be the one to escalate, then you're free to put a roundhouse through his spinal column with a clean conscience.

or rip their eyes out so they can't see you and aggro but. I'm more of a bash skull against head pacifist where skull being someone elses until we come to agreement.

Make them drink vampire blood and out them as a night creature lol. Hey it works to subjugate rulers of a civilization without using violence for the most part.

One of my companions got pissy with me for "murdering" a Moon Troll. He didn't attack me, but spent the whole journey complaining and spitting at me. Only time something like that has happened to me.
