Like cats in a tree (just climb back down!)
« on: December 22, 2015, 11:49:41 am »

I recently had a dwarf die of thirst on the second level of a large tree. She was a woodcutter, so I think she may have been scared by some local wildlife. According to the wiki, trees are always safe to climb, so I wonder why she didn't just climb down. Has anyone else had dwarves stuck like cats in a tree?

It is a constant problem on one of my forts. The dwarves keep getting stuck in trees all over the map. I ended up having to use a woodcutter to chop down the tree they were stuck in to get them down. Tried everything else to get them out too. Tried using burrows to make the surface forbidden to them, tried drafting them and stationing them in the fort, tried using a workshop set only to them to make them attempt to path to it. Nothing worked at getting them out except for cutting the tree down.

I had a merchant's horse get stuck in a tree and go berserk.  A half dozen dwarves who felt vengeful climbed up the tree and beat the horse to death.  Then I had to build a staircase alongside the tree so they'd all walk back down.

I had a miner get caught in a tree... and then when I cut the tree down to get him out, one of the logs hit him in the head and killed him instantly.  ::)

Its not dwarfy...but..did you try considering building a ramp or an down+up ( as in both ) staircase to get him down?

This also generally happens on SECOND GENERATION and more saplings than full grown trees.

It would be great if dwarves in distress would shout for help. I had no idea my woodcutter was in trouble until she had been missing for a week.

I lost a fort to this.

There was a giant louse (or something similar but effectively harmless) up a tree.  It was technically in empty space next to the upper branches, minding its own business, until the merchants showed up.

One of the merchants apparently hated it and started a fight, which (somehow) caused trading to end instantly and the caravan to leave.  Every one of my dwarves immediately declared war on the giant louse and tried to kill it.

This meant climbing up the tree, with everyone getting stuck in the same location.  About twenty dwarves, slowly dying of thirst, enraged at a giant bug that was trying to mind its own business.

I suspect the dorfs (and critters) get stuck in trees when a sapling matures under them and hoists them into the air. Climbers can also be trapped by the branch rearrangement resulting from tree growth, but that would require them to climb the trees in the first place.

I had a miner get stuck in a tree after channeling a nearby layer. Cut the tree down and he made it out ok. It seems that despite climbing being implemented, the ai and pathfinding have issues with - or refuse - to use it.

But then I think of a pump operator whom I watched climb across a rough cave wall to get back to the fort because that was the only path available. It's like sometimes the ai's climbing works and sometimes it doesn't. I'd think they'd climb down from being stuck in a tree because that's the only pathing options available, but they don't.

Dwarves climb trees to escape stuff. Thats how mine normally get stuck anyway.

One of the dwarfs walked in front of Thor to get a better view of the prye, and Thor kicked him irritably into the middle of the flames, which made Thor feel slightly better and made all the dwarfs feel much worse.

Strange, I had a bunch of miners climb their way out of my death pits, that's usually how I get them out when I feel lazy.
Also 100% sure that I had dwarves stuck in altitude or across water trying they luck climbing walls (sometimes making Lara Croft looks like an amateur) when they begun getting really thirsty/hungry.

That was in 40. though, not 42. Maybe a bug introduced by the new needs system?
Probably need reporting, the climbing system was put in place specifically to put an end to that.

I retired my last fort because of this.  Dramatic 10+ cliffs.  Keas.  At least 10 dead dwarves stranded in trees, half of them legendary in something useful.  They'd get scared and get into a tree one way or another then die of dehydration.  The only way to catch it was to be constantly alert for any dwarves hunting small animals or checking thirst levels in Therapist.  Not that it did much good, cutting the trees down meant a 10+ drop and floor-bridges often came too late.

I ended up going to a new place rather than continue to deal with it.  I hate it.

It seems npc, (dwarves or animal or anything) are able to climb up when there's a combat (even if not "real" combat, but just the npc running away from a possible combat) but are not able to climb down, only making stairs/ramps for them can allow them to go back to ground.

It's a very bad situation indeed as if there's no possibility to make stairs/ramps to rescue the npc from tree/wall/roof, you break your fort worforce.
And it can even destroy your fort performance if the stuck npc gets a mood.

I hope this one will get fixed.

At the moment, I have a thripman scholar hanging out in a tree (he arrived like that). So i cut down all the surrounding trees and hes just chilling on the same z-level as before. I understand he has wings but hes not moving at all. I was actually a little excited about him showing up.

Try building a staircase (2 levels) to a spot next to one of the tree's branches.  Giving the creature a walkable path to the rest of the fortress is usually enough.
