Phoebus Graphics question
« on: December 21, 2015, 05:12:34 pm »

I've been using Phoebus for ages and never really though much of it until now. When engraving I'm given all sorts of various graphics to represent what each dwarf has engraved. Ultimately I don't really care what they've engraved and I'm just looking to have the graphics look like the used to.

Is there another pack that I should be using or is there perhaps an option that I'm missing. I'll admit that even after playing for years I'm completely a newb when it comes to this type of thing. Currently if I want graphics I load up the good old Lazy Newb Pack, click on the graphics tab, click on Phoebus, click Install.

I'd be grateful for any help.

There should be an option in the init file that determines whether engraved walls show what's on them or not.

Kind of what I assumed but I'm not able to locate anything that offers direction for where or what that option would be. Failing an option like that I would hope that there would be a modification I could make to the pack itself where when it's called to supply graphics for a specific engraved tile I could just tell it to use the same graphic for all engraved tiles.

Inside your main dwarf fortress folder should be a folder called 'data'. Inside that should be another folder called 'init'.

In that is a file called d_init. There should be an option in there called ENGRAVINGS_START_OBSCURED. If set to 'YES', then the graphics on engraved walls should be gone.

This is also an option in game, but is done on each square manually, switching from a singular wall graphic to a graphic showing what is engraved, or vice versa. This option is in the designations menu, and is called 'Toggle Engravings'.

Edit: Put the wrong setting by accident.

If engravings are turned on, it doesn't matter what graphics pack you use, they'll show up.

1) Edit d_init.txt

2) Change [ENGRAVINGS_START_OBSCURED:NO] to [ENGRAVINGS_START_OBSCURED:YES]

-- Ninja'd but, the setting for no visible engravings is YES so I'll keep this here.

Btw, it's not a special engraving character (when they're all different), they're just a shaded picture of the main topic of the engraving. Obscured engravings have a special character.
