As for the highschool setting, it's just what we're familiar with.

Unfortunately familiarity breeds stagnation and anime bullshit. Or in my case, contempt.
Actual proper combat missions don't make sense. There's duty of care. It's a school, not a PMC. And if it were that easy, the staff could just do it on their lunch breaks.

The problem is having the option of stats in the first place. It's all well and good when you try to stat up people who conform, but try and stat up, say, Hana, who by definition is unkillable unless someone could destroy every single piece of gaming related knowledge simultaneously. It wouldn't work out.

The trouble is the implications of sending children on dangerous missions. This isn't RWBY, ya know.

Again, why not just go with a sitcom-style premise? Characters can go be cops, or just accountants or whatever.

Go deal with all the issues of feeling like they're working a dead-end job, or keeping touch with old friends living abroad, or office politics and all that jazz.

Semipopular doesn't automatically default to anime. Also, anime doesn't automatically mean "let's wing it". At least I don't think it does. Though that would explain a lot.
