Bandits - New Experience!?
« on: December 19, 2015, 11:49:49 pm »

I'm witnessing bandits actually robbing a farmer on the streets of a hamlet!

I've never seen them do anything, but just now I dumbfoundedly watched the goblin bandits spit at a farmer, take their pouch of coins and empty it, and then tell me everything is fine. They turned to the farmer again, punched him in the face, and wandered off..

This is so cool, never seen this before. :D

That's excellent!
Now, the real test, if you slaughter the bandits in front of the farmer then go brag to him about it, will you gain a reputation as a murderer or a hero?

I had bandits come up and accost me in the streets ... by telling me how they were feeling today. They then proceeded to follow me around until I walked behind a building, at which point my followers had had enough and decided to fight with them. They weren't hostile to me ... just my buddies ...

In some societies, indirect communication is important. The true meaning of words is understood between both parties due to mutual cultural background without the need to specifically state intent word-for-word.

Take for example the following exchange:

Bandit: I'm feeling down today.   (Hand over your cash)
Dwarf: Only today I killed 3 keas while stalking the happy hills.   (No way).
Bandit: It was inevitable.  (Gonna cut you up, dwarf)
Dwarf walks away   (let us put an end to this conflict)
Bandit: I'm fine. (Unprintable insult)
Dwarves companions proceed to beat up bandits.

I had that happen last night... except it was a Swordmaster, Mace Lord, and two Elite Wrestlers... so, be careful which bandits you shrug off.

I suggest dropping out of fast travel just outside the ambush range, put your speed up to sprint, haul ass up while they're robbing someone and dragonfall one while disarming another, then peg another one with the weapon(s) you ganked. If you don't escalate it straight to no quarter immediately and are impressive enough the bandits will turn tail and run.

Frankly, they were terrible at it. My companions couldn't believe their eyes when those people they stabbed turned into corpses!

This isn't new, they've done this last version, too. After intimidating a pack of them away, I've seen them go screw with the locals. They also tried robbing my companion while I was inside a building, and I didn't realize until I came out and saw him beheaded.

They weren't as consistent about it.

Before they'd still kinda wait for you to come around before they picked a target. A lot more shit takes place even while you aren't actually at a site in 42.xx than it did in 40.24 by far. That plus people having the freedom to go around town and do whatever they feel like, be it head to a tavern, go down to the church, just go for a stroll, or hang out in the keep, means you get all sorts of hustle and bustle all the time which is fantastic.

Part of the problem last version was if there weren't people already at the well or a couple that were just about to go you'd never see bandits do this, now you get people coming and going and heading over to chat and just strolling around.

Both.
You will be murderer, because you murdered someone.
You will be hero, because you killed a bandit.

And yeah, atacks happend. When you start in village during raid you will get different message at start. :)

No on the second; no matter what kind of criminal you kill, people will always consider it just a fight between two people, and the one who instigated will be the murderer. You get no credit for killing bandits. You don't even get credit for killing verified night creatures, but they won't (usually) consider you the aggressor.

In my experiance, night creatures work fine and bandits are a mixed bag.
reputations in df are weird, killer means you killed a thing and murderer is totally different.
But people have been very happy about me killing vampires.

Night creatures, vampires and transformed lycanthropes, don't get the same consideration as other sapients. Spouses of night trolls sometimes do, if they're living around the keep, you can find people in denial about their nature.

Some bandits are a lot more skilled than others.

My friends and I killed a titan and a griffin no problem, not a single injury.

Then a human axeman (not even axelord!) almost cleaned my clock with a copper battleaxe.

Parried maybe one out of six hits I had the option to parry. Have two scars to show for it. Luckily, no amputations, thanks to masterpiece steel.

EDIT: NEVER MIND. I was under a mummy's curse. Time to retire that guy.

I've killed many bandits and wasn't accused of murder, people seemed to not care one way or another about me still.

I find it's okay to walk right up to the bandits unprovoked and kill them, people don't care. (Although, the bandits were considered to be harassing them.)
