Year 9, still no goblin siege

In they 9 years of my fortress, all I've seen is a few kobold thieves, which stopped coming after year 2 as well, an occasional werebeast, and 2 Cyclopses, which I caged and will be used for overdue stay guest disposal.

My civilization list does show goblins, yet the only goblins I've seen in 9 years are visiting artists and the like. I don't think my civilization is at war with them though. When I select them in the (c)iv menu, they only have a W with the kobolds, and a P with everyone else.

If they're not at war, will I ever get sieges or ambushes?

Try this -- first make a copy of your save folder so as not to wreck your real one, and then open up the copy and abandon/retire the fort.

Next, start up Legends Mode on the copy of your save with the fort abandoned and use the "Historical Maps" screen -- cycle forward a couple years and make a note of where the Goblin civilization Dark Fortresses and sites are located.  Then cycle forward until the present (whatever year your fortress is in) and see what parts of the map the goblin civs have expanded to cover.  Is your fort inside of one of their territory at all?

If you are inside their territory, then take a look at the state of that goblin civ to make sure they aren't all dead or wiped out already, maybe there's only a handful of them left?  Legends Viewer or World Viewer may be more helpful for figuring that out.

Toady mentioned that it's possible for visitors to travel from quite far away to visit so they could be from civs on the other side of the world. Were goblins actually listed as neighbours when you embarked?

(Also what's your population? After 9 years I guess you're over 80, but you might be playing a dying civ or something...)

Yeah, goblins were listed when embarking. I very much doubt they are dead, since the human and elf diplomats keep telling me about a goblin army conquering their sites.

My population (real fortress member dwarves) is 54. My init pop cap is 70, I like to keep my fps decent. Playing at 18 (surface level) - 35 FPS (below ground view) now, with 54 dwarves, 24 permanent residents, 61 'temporary' guests in my tavern (which refuse to go away), and 45 various pets/livestock.

I might dive into legends if I feel like it, but I doubt I'll learn they're dead. Perhaps their armies are just too preoccupied attacking elves and humans.

Still, below 80 population, I should see at least some smaller invasions, you'd think. My previous fort (42.01) had small groups of goblins sieging in year 2 at much lower population.

Sieges don't happen at all until population is over 80.

Do ambushes give the red siege text in the screen when discovered? I guess it was an ambush then back in 42.01. I should get those, right?

Not correct. I just got a siege today at 20-25 dwarves.

Not correct. I just got a siege today at 20-25 dwarves.
Did you fort at any point have over 80 dwarves? There is also an option in the init file where you can lower the number.

It's not the init file, it's in the entity raw file (can be edited without making a new world). Interesting people are getting goblin sieges before pop 80 though. Are goblin ambushes actually working again then? It was a goblin siege, right? Zombies come regardless of pop size.

Had a goblin siege at about pop 20 in previous version that I couldn't explain. 5th or 6th fortress in a row, I guess I must have embarked right in their path while they were going someplace else.

I have been sieged three times in the four years of my forts existance. The last siege was 204 strong and filled with beak dogs and trolls. I got lucky and have both magnetite, hematite, and chalk as shallow materials so my fort has an insane value. I also am not using any mods whatsoever save for Ironhand graphics.

I've always been sieged with pops lower than 80. Now I have a 100+ pop, fort worth 3mil and only had one siege of goblin bowmen who ran away after 2 or 3 of them died to traps.

And strangely, there was a goblin snatcher and a human snatcher with the siege.

I've always been sieged with pops lower than 80. Now I have a 100+ pop, fort worth 3mil and only had one siege of goblin bowmen who ran away after 2 or 3 of them died to traps.

And strangely, there was a goblin snatcher and a human snatcher with the siege.
By 'always' do you mean, in this version (or miraculously in 40.x)?
Earlier versions had loads of ambushes/sieges so aren't really relevant. Neither are zombies.

While plentiful sieges are a welcome sight, with no trade/wealth triggers goblins shouldn't theoretically be sieging before population 80 (in vanilla DF).

Unless...all those lost 40.x goblin armies have to turn up somewhere, don't they?  :o

Like the inverse drawbridge! It has to put them somewhere, so it puts them in another dimension. I suppose this version is the Plane of Sieges again!

Hm I use a pop cap of 60 and beautify a lot so either that changes the trigger for population or I reach a wealth trigger, I guess.

And in this version I stopped using the pop cap because of the extra jobs and petitions and so on.

Given that as how loyalty works in the game in relation to civs, you must be at peace with the goblins (conquerer/conqueree) by the very fact that they turn up. If you were at war they would have not arrived in the first place, and if you were to suddenly declare war, the loyalty cascade would set all those gobbos to hostile meaning a siege on your very doorstep.
