So why doesn't having the same Last name make you family
« on: December 16, 2015, 04:22:45 pm »

I made two adventurers with the name "Battleborn" and expected them to know one another. It kinda is weird to see them talk about "no family to speak of" when they are next to one another.

More importantly, why do children not inherit their parents' last name?

Currently last names are not family names. They're strangers.

Because your surname (in rl) not only belongs to your family - this would be weird, thinking of all the "Smiths", "Schmidts", etc. you can find throughout the world.

More importantly, why do children not inherit their parents' last name?

Because it would be a mess finding a specific person.
If you stroll through Legends Mode you will find many dwarves/elves/humans/goblins bearing the same forename (even if they belong to the same family). And now consider you would have to talk/kill to Ido "whateversurnameyouwant" and there would be three of them, scattered around the world.
Nope, the current systems does make much more sense in terms of gameplay.
And if you look back in history, you will see, that many childs (when leaving their home) got new names, considering their jobs, heritage, old dwelling places.

Toady mentioned it in df talk once, apparently that kind of thing wasn't common among people back then  according to him. (If I remember correctly), he did say he might do it at some point though, make it part of the entity file for example.

I would love if you could do a kind of rogue legacy type thing. I do believe it's planned.

what can happen now however ( it's definetly not as cool as doing it in play) is you retire an adventurer and they run off and get married and have kids due to world activation. That has happened to me and toady even mentioned it.

I kniw about that, and that's radical! I kinda wish relationship stuff could be done in play too. Like making friends, getting married, or rivalry. But for now I guess I just gotta bs through it.

It's planned eventually. Just not here yet. I'm waiting for sending your people out in Fortress mode, and being able to run a fortress/business in Adventure mode!

I think last names are given names also, and can be given by anyone. Try starting an adventurer with no last name, and it will be given to you before a title is. Sometimes it's given in separate compound parts.
