I don't remember putting in Green Fl... oh.. oh gods. (Taverns)
« on: December 14, 2015, 10:39:50 am »

So like do we know if Vomit ever gets cleaned up in Interiors?  Cause right now my Tavern's floor is pretty much covered in Vomit and it's nasty.  I have set some dorfs to cleaning only duty but they don't seem interested in cleaning up all the vomit.

Otherwise I might have to make a suggestion for assignable cleaning or some such.

I've been holding out for designated cleaning for a real long while now...

Right now, it's such a low priority job it almost never gets done, let alone finished to completion.

Engineer some sort of automatic floor cleaning mechanism to flood the tavern from season to season, training swimming and doctors simultaneously.

My dwarves clean the tavern all the time.  Make sure yours includes a meeting area, not just a dining room.  ("Defining a meeting area might get the dwarves to clean that area more often.")  Also, rumors say smoothing the floor may make them more likely to clean it, but I'm not sure if any science has been done on that.

Is it underground or above ground?

i have the same question

i have two taverns, one for visitors and one for dwarves
the one for visitors is made of constructed wood floors and its above ground and inside
the other one is smoothed gneiss and underground

neither get cleaned, and i have two "janitors" assigned to them

My tavern is fully underground, carved out of stone.

Yeah the tavern is a Meeting Area style one (Read about the issue with Barkeeps not keeping bar if it was from a table.)  Also my tavern's above ground,  and the floors are constructed Limestone floors.  (I had lots of limestone and no iron producing Metals on the map that I can see so far.)

Heh, my dwarves tend to clean. Including a weredwarf who splattered another dwarf all over a wall. Cleaned it up right nicely when he transformed back. (Since the fort had too few resources to do anything neat with monthly timers/superdwarves/etc., I had to execute him.)

I think the key is just having a lot of idlers.

Dwarves have a personality trait that relates to cleaning and cleanliness, and I suspect it influences how rigorous they are when choosing to clean - much like how nurses with very low willingness to help others just will not ever retrieve wounded to take them to the hospital.

Set up a drainage system and periodically do a controlled flood of the tavern to flush out the vomit and body parts.

On a related note: is there currently any safe way to build fortifications / grates / etc so that things will never be washed through them?

Try this:

Code: [Select]
BPPWX
WOOOO

Where b is floor bars, pp a pump pumping from the left, W water, and X a floodgate (just in case). This is both immune to washing items out AND building destroyers.

Edit: The diagram's crap, never mind. Just have a pump pumping water out of the room, with floor bars covering the input tile of the pump. If you aren't worried about building destroyers, you don't even need the bars: just use a pump.

As far as acquiring water goes, I like to embark with a brook and cut a stairway into it from below.  So long as you don't disturb the surface tiles, you've got safe, clean water that'll restock so long as it's not frozen.

Building destroyers can't break bars from below? News to me.
