Can dwarves be injured by logs falling from cut trees?
« on: December 12, 2015, 05:25:41 pm »

I have a fisherdwarf in the hospital with a broken finger and it says the "fight" occured where a tree was recently cut down

They can (and will) die by falling logs, too.

Oh yes, and it happened a lot more before rebalancing, IIRC.

No; the logs from a cut tree fall harmlessly. However, if some of those logs get caught in another tree, cutting down that second tree will cause the stuck logs to fall with lethal force. You can try to prevent injuries with careful micromanagement, or just recruit a few more cheesemakers for tree cutting.

Hmm, that's possible.

How do you micro manage the logging? The only reliable way I can think of is to build walls to block the wood cutter from standing where he shouldn't, as neither traffic restrictions nor burrows have had any effect whatsoever when I've tried them.

How do you micro manage the logging?

You can pause the game when a dwarf reaches a tree, check the z-levels above, and cancel the chopping if there's anything above. You could also harvest every other tree in a checkerboard pattern to (hopefully) leave any suspended logs on the remaining trees. Or you could probably build bridges as an "awning" to catch falling logs--trees can grow through them (v0.40), but falling objects should be stopped.

Thanks Loci, I didn't think of these options (still, too much work, so I'll just accept a wood cutter gets hurt every second fortress).

Considering how dangerous lumberjacking is in real life (even now, with machines - check out the mortality and injury stats on lumberjacking in the middle ages with hand tools...) I would consider that a feature and not a bug :)

So I just had this happen to me, when Urist 1 cut a tree, causing the logs to hit Urista 2. Then Urist 3 the ranger, Urista's husband, instantly starts attacking Urist 1.
Why is this? Do the falling logs constitute an attack?

And as a follow up, will my fort descend into a loyalty cascade?
